Hello, I am writing to inquire if your organization has information on the 2000 Olympic Games and qualifications for the karate team. I’ve tried several sources but have not been successful. I would appreciate any assistance that you can provide.

---- Karate is not on the Olympic schedule for a variety of reason so there is no Olympic karate team. There has been a lot of discussion on our chat pages over the last several years and perhaps you can find some reasoning there.

The cane is GREAT and I value it highly. If I want to order some, how much are they? You didn't give me a manual but I am thoroughly trained in the Korean use of a cane and have taught that weapon for many years.

12/18/99 -- Commentary on WKF Rules Changes. From Pat Hickey to Rich Stamper, Director Goju-Ryu Karate-do Kyokai, In reply to Mark Cramer's comments in the last newsletter.

It is with interest that I read Mark Cramer’s comments on the proposed WKF rule changes. Initially rules for the former WUKO were Ippon Shobu – one point victory. A waza-ari could be given for a technique almost comparable to an Ippon. Referees were reluctant to give an ippon for anything as that immediately decided the match. If they made a mistake (meaning someone did not agree with them) then their license and reputation were at stake. Fighters began to restrict themselves to essentially a reverse punch trying to definitely stick each other as other types of techniques were not given the same or any weight. Because of the way the referees called ippon and since targets were restrictive (the groin was not a target) and since only limited off-balancing was allowed ("foot" sweeps only not "nage" waza) matches became unexciting. I am not saying a well-timed reverse punch is not exciting, just that you could be lulled asleep during the match and miss the only exciting instance of competitive dominance.

12/18/99 -- Death of Emilo Narvaez

Emilo Narvaez former PKA World Light heavyweight champion passed away last Thursday December 16 in an automobile accident. Mr. Narvaez won the World Title in 1982 at the age of 24. He also fought Bill Wallace for the middleweight title on ABC's wide world of sports at the age of 17. He was trained by Dr. Eddie Andujar (PKA's first welterweight world champion) and Sensei Marty Manuel both of Olympic Center Karate & Kickboxing. Friends were received at Rone Funeral Service, Vineland, NJ. A funeral liturgy was celebrated Dec 21 at Sacred Heart Church, Landis Ave, Vineland, NJ

Nosa, Kwan Mu! Merry New Millennium!! I apologize it has taken me so long to e-mail you. When I got back from Africa (Lesotho and Cape Town) I had loads of catching up to do. Our trip was absolutely fantastic! It was the best week of motorcycling I have ever had. Imagine riding a Torquey dirt bike all over mountain roads and drainage basins where there are no rules and no boundaries... this is the way it was! We rode right through Besotho villages and scattered their animal herds. They usually thought we were part of the off-road rally race and would cheer us on. I've attached a few of my favorite pictures (sorry, they are a bit large). The next time I come up I will bring my photo album.

I just read the Dec. KMK bulletin (I enjoyed it as usual) and I noticed the Kobudo Test on 8 Jan (a Sensei requirement). I have a feeling it was a response to my earlier e-mail where I wrote: I'm very sad to say that I will have to miss the Kobudo test. All next week I will be in Phoenix working on the F-16 and won't get back until the night of the 8th. In fact January is incredibly busy. The third week I'll be in Missouri doing the B-2 Stealth Bomber. Lately I've been teaching my higher rank students the bo manipulations, ippon, and Tsui Sho (bunkai with Brown Belt). I am going to plan to come up on Feb 19 for the scheduled KMK training class. Hopefully nothing will prevent me from attending. With all due respect.

I have noticed on the world wide web that you are a direct student of Master Park Chull Hee and continue to have an active relationship with him. I am aware of a manual that Master Park wrote in the early 1950's on the Kang Duk Won school of Taekwondo. I am very interested in obtaining a copy (or a reproduction) of that manual. My own martial arts lineage traces a winding path that reaches back to him through his student, the late Kum Chun Kim. I greatly appreciate any help you can offer me in tracking down the book.

I received my 9th Dan from him some years ago and also have a 9th dan with Nam Sook Lee, his gymnasium brother. Hello, I am writing in hopes that this message will connect with martial artists around the world. As a serious martial artist I cannot help but be offended, no disgusted by the proliferation of so called kickboxing certifications. Who are these aerobic organizations? What authority do they have to certify every person that has the wherewithal to pay an exuberant fee and take a multiple choice test? How dare they bastardize a beautiful art for sake of short-term profits? But more importantly, what are we, the martial arts community doing about it, besides jumping on the band wagon? I'm sorry, but if I hear one more person brag about how they are going to take a two-day certification course enabling them to teach something that in actuality takes decades of dedication to master, I may very well scream. The truth is they don't know anything. They can't teach anything. And the only thing they will ever do is cause injury and damage an ancient art. What is happening to our art is simply a disgrace. What will these people attempt next: one-hour skydiver instructor certification?

I have to give you a great complement your web page is the Rolls Royce of karate web sites. You have so much information that it takes days to read it all. The part I enjoy the most is the message archives. Looking back at the past and seeing your insight might make us see the future without our rose colored glasses.

Karate today in the United States is the direct result of the hard work, travel and energy that you put into it. You took karate to a level that no one could have. Mr. Anderson you were and will always be a great leader. The eagle is a great logo for you and the USAKF. I once read that "No one can predict to what heights you can soar. Even you will not know until you spread your wings." Well, your wings spread and the USAKF took American Karate to a level that was unmatched.

I know the National Governing Body for karate has a new captain at the helm, but you took that ship over rough seas and you kept your courage, not to lose sight of your goals. This has been a long time coming, but thank you for all you have done for the American karate athlete, coach, official and instructor. And most of all what you did for me.

12/13/99 Formation of North American Ju-Jitsu Union---JJNAU

On December 11-12 the Kwanmukan hosted the super-important Ju-Jitsu International Federation’s (JJIF) meetings between the US Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJ), Ju-Jitsu Canada and Ju-Jitsu Mexico. The purpose of the meeting was to form the Ju-Jitsu North American Union and elect the officers under the supervision of the JJIF. JJIF President Rinaldo Orlandi - Italy, Secretary Frank Furst - Denmark, Treasurer Paul Hoglund - Sweden, Vice-President Luis Baguena, Spain, (former president of International Judo Federation) and Commissioner George Anderson met with the USJJ officials: President Bruce Bethers, Treasurer Bob Chatwood, Directors Dr. Brian Pendleton, Dr. Mike Dunphy, Jeff Ellis, Dr. Brian Pendleton, Mike Piaser, Larry Feldman, David Ames, Carl Wilcox, Major James Caldwell, Pat Hickey, Larry Lame, and from Canada: Ron Yamanaka, Pat Barton, Ron Rasico, Prof. Forrester, and from Mexico, Sensei Daniel Hernandez and several of his delegates. -- The first day the meetings convened at the prestigious Trustee’s Lounge at the University of Akron, courtesy of AU President Proenza and arranged by Dr. Pendleton The room was a great setting with elegant decor, a wide and long board table and very plush push back chairs, all of which created a high level corporate atmosphere which set the pace for the cordial discussions which followed. JJIF President Orlandi explained in detail the organization of the JJIF and stressed the JJIF membership and participation in the World Games. USJJ, Canadian, and Mexican presidents also spoke of their federation’s development, and USJJ President Bethers proceeded to plot the goals for the new Union’s future which finally ended with Commissioner Anderson elaborating on a diagram proposed by V.P. Baguena which said that the framework could be viewed as a pyramid divided into three parts. The top would be the elite athletics, the center the technical seminars and training and the bottom the historical base and development and research -- The following day the congress met at the home of USJJ of Ohio, Hickey’s CMA, inspected the large facilities and proceeded to elect officers. Elected were: USJJ President Bethers, President ——Mexico’s Daniel Hernandez,Canada’s Pat Barton, Secretary— and USA and Kwanmukan Shihan Jeff Ellis,Treasurer. Commissioner Anderson was commended for a job well done, given a plaque and his position as commissioner retired. The meeting adjourned with good feelings all around. • After the meeting, Hanshi Anderson took the JJIF officers to his home and then to dinner at the Portage Lakes, where they sat at a window by the water and had a great old time. The next day they toured the Amish country and bought presents for their families back in Europe. It was interesting that they all bought the small candy canes that you can hang on the tree. Treasurer Furst was the last to leave and while he waited for his flight, we visited Dunphy’s dojo and watched Sensei Sheri Rhoades teach the young beginners class and Adam and Nicole Pyle’s demonstration of Kata and Kobudo. Frank said that was a great visit and it was the perfect termination for a wonderful trip.

To All Martial Artist: -I am sorry to have to inform all that the karate world has suffered another great loss. This morning (Saturday, 12-11-99), Master Eiichi Miyazato, Successor of Miyagi Chojun Sensei for Okinawa Goju-Ryu Jundokan, has just died (passed away in his sleep). The only information we have is he had been in reasonable health in October / November and that Master Miyazato was currently in the hospital and become weaker over a short time until he past away.

All instructors associated with the JundoKan are asked to wear a black arm band on their left sleeve and cover the kamiza in their dojo with black cloth for the next 49 days in keeping with Japanese mourning tradition. Also in keeping with tradition, money should be offered instead of flowers (to help the family offset funeral costs). This should be sent directly to the JundoKan, Okinawa. We are fortunate that the Jundokan format of Goju Ryu Kata were recently/formally accepted as the JKF Goju Kai Shitie Kata and that Miyazato Sensei had the devotion to train many other teachers in this wonderful style. Miyazato Sensei was a man not just interested in the spread of Goju Ryu but in Karate-Do as a whole for the good-will of all in the world. Having been a survivor of WW II and a student of Chojun Miyagi he leaves us inspired, spiritualized and well trained. He will be missed greatly by us all.

Are you able to get this information directly from GM Park Chull Hee? Also, I did not realize you knew my teacher, Grandmaster Kim Soo. I came across your article as I am doing a good bit of reading I will fly to Houston and test for my Sixth Dan. So I will discuss this with Grandmaster Kim. I know when Grandmaster Kim was in Russia about six years ago, he was on a "talk show" and asked if anyone knew where Grandmaster Yoon was to please let him know. Our reply-- I hear from GM Park regularly and he stays at my house here when he travels East. I hold 9th dan with him and have known him since the sixties. I also knew Kim Pyung Soo because he was senior to my instructor, Il Joo Kim, and visited us in the early sixties. A student of GM Kim, Carlos Cruz also practiced with me for some time in the seventies. I has talked to GM Kim during the last year and we have been in communication on the www. He is a very good man and one of the few great masters of the Twentieth Century.

(Read full text) On November 26, 1999, the Shudokan Martial Arts Association lost its President and founder. Walter Todd Sensei, eighth dan, has passed on. He was 72 years old, and his wife Eve and two children survive him. While Todd Sensei had not operated a dojo for some time, he continued to teach seminars, and he remained actively involved in the Japanese martial ways until the end of his life. Despite advanced age, and in spite of suffering from injuries and illness for many years, he never reached a point in his life where he could no longer teach. Cards, letters, and other expressions of sympathy will be forwarded to the family by the SMAA. 11/3/99 - The Global Martial Arts Federation want to address the Hall of Fame issue -- From: Dr. James A. L. Dussault, drjad@acun.com

It seems that a large number of Martial Arts Hall's of Fame are being created around the world by groups seeking notoriety and to attract members. Of course, some of the Halls-of-Fame are solid and of long standing, with strong requirements, and have duly qualified and noted inductees. The Global Martial Arts Federation is one of these few elite organizations with a Hall of Fame of the highest standing. Moreover this Hall of Fame is made up of some of the world's distinguished World Leaders, Global Peace Makers and prominent Martial Artists.

To be a member of this Hall-of-Fame, a present member of the Hall of Fame must nominate a potential candidate to the International dignitaries Recognition Board. Soon afterward, the nomination must be voted on by the present members of the Hall of Fame. To be inducted the nominee must receive 2/3 votes in favor of the candidate before the nominee can become officially inducted.

Global Martial Arts Federation then presents the new inductee with a hand written scroll from China or a framed certificate. Our organization NEVER CHARGES for awards. Our philosophy is --An award is just that - An award .

( NO ONE should have to pay for an award in any manner or be required to pay any kind of charges to nominating someone for an award. Any organization that charges for an award has diminished the honor of the award and has traduced the members of the awarding body. You will never see the Baseball Hall of Fame charge it's nominees to be inducted nor the National Football League charge it's inductees, so why should the martial arts be any different than these world renown sports organizations?

All 9th , 10th Dan's are automatically inducted into the Global Martial Halls-of-Fame. In order to become a 9th or 10th dan with Global Martial Arts Federation one must be voted in by 85 % of the Great Grandmasters that are currently serving on the international promotion board.

Great Grandmaster George E. Anderson is a an inductee of the Global Martial Arts Halls-of-Fame in 1991. His documents were presented to him at the White House in Washington D.C. in 1992.

10/29/99 Regarding a converation about the value of a Hall-of-Fame Invitation. To Lt. Col Bruce Bethers, President USJJ

For the Hall of Fame, I was told one time by a group that if I paid $200 I would be nominated and installed and that later changed into - just come. I did neither because I did not like the criteria for nomination and, as in the Hindu Mahabarata, when the protagonist was invited to Heaven, he saw all the unworthies of his mortal life there in splendor and comfort: upon seeing this he declined entrance into that traduced wonderland. That was a test for the true to see if they really qualified. If you can be bought by bobbles, spangles, and beads, then you are not, in my opinion, worthy of true honors. Of course, if it makes you a lot of money and notoriety ?????

I belong to the Black Belt Magazine, the USA Karate Federation, and the USJJ Halls of Fame. The Black Belt Magazine is hard but everyone is there - most are worthy but popularity gets you good change. The USA Karate Federation - that is a tough one. You have to have done something, USOC Karate Athlete of the Year, Pan American or World Champion, outstanding international competitor, best coach over a span of 10 years, or the man of the year, etc. Over 25 years we have about 30. I was in because of the Man of the Year in the 80 s, the President of the Federation, a Board Member of the USOC, President of the Pan American Union, First VP of the World Union, President of the Pan American and World Referee Councils, And director of the World Medical Commission. I feel I did important things and it pains me to be in the same line up as the Night-Manager of Ronnie s Drive Inn, if you get what I mean. Some Halls of Fame I know just want you to come to the banquet, have your picture taken with some aspirant to high places so he can say that he is your close associate, and submit to having your name on their web-site. This may have been either while I was away or before my time. What exactly are these arguments you mentioned, their content, and what the USJF stands for.

Dear Thomas, The argument was over the recognition of grade. To participate in the IJJF events you had to have grade recognized by the IJJF, USJA (the renamed Armed Forces Judo) would not work. It finally was decided that grade had to be recognized. You should be able to find this in the Library of Congress. I will ask my son where to look.

My daughter has been a student for nearly four years under the Kwanmukan program. Back in March of this year we were told that there was going to be a change in the testing/promotionals. I, and my daughter, have been asking at her current school to explain to us how these changes were going to effect her, and how the progressions were going to change. She received her brown belt after testing in July 98. She had tested in November 98, March 99, May 99, and again in July 99. I'm not sure now at what level she is at, or where she stands as far as testing for her black belt. Ihate to trouble you with this but I just can't seem to get a straight answer on this issue. My daughter is finding this verfrustrating and honestly so am I. Your assistance with this issue is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry to be so late with this but the email was lost from a crash and it is just now recovered. The grade changes were made because the time in grade for the Juniors was too short and was extended by the shihans because they were not ready for the next grade. This would mean that they would miss promotionals and not get a chance to be part of the group dynamics and to related to the other students of their grade group. This is good or bad depending on the who gets the money and if the control is turned into a competitive business. Hello USAKF! I got with pleasure your message and like a Karate lover I always have right contact with another Association and Confederation in the whole world. My name is Paulo Marcondes, black tie 1st dan and I have practiced for 11 years, I am admitted at C.B.K.(Edgar Ferraz) that is joined at W.K.F. My teacher is Aldemir JUNGLOS, 4th Dan, he practices GOJU-RYU style which president is Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi. For some times our competitions are not working because Saiko Shan Ryuzo Watanabe had died last year who is president at whole South America. At this our Federation hasn't been communication so much in the competitions because we had some politics problems. We are admitted at Paramaense Federation is located in Curitiba, which is Parana Capital, localized in the South of Brazil. I had been training for some years to Juvenile Brazilian Team of Karate and I won several times. In 1996 I was called to dispute at Juvenile World Champion at Johannesburg South Africa, but in Brazil we don't have base to sports. In our Association there are the best athletes, by JUNGLOS who several times was champion in a lot of orders like: south american, brazilian and he had great results at world one. I can't forget to tell that he has trained several important Teams. There were some offenses between Junglos(my Association) and teacher ALDO LUBES who is Director at C.B.K. and F.Pr.K. For these motives we were forced to not to compete and throw from saddle several teams (male/female). I know Edgar Ferraz will as I was the president of PUKO for some year. 10/10/99 -- Arguments over American high Dan recognition by World TKD Federation (Korean). Read all about it -- This started when a critical article by Dr. James Dussault was posted on the web regarding the generally held view that Americas were not receiving the recognition due for their life's achievement in the arts, and that high dan grades given by the Kwans were not treated fairly and non-Korean masters were not given their due recognition. A reply was that there were many non-Korean masters under the WTF but this countered with the claim that the term <non-Korean> could have several meanings. One that the person was still an ethnic Korean, perhaps a citizen of a nation outside Korea and even could be first generation Korean, The other that the person was not of Korean descent. The arguments are lively and complicated but it does appear that being ethnic Korean is an advantage and that being other than such leads to damaging discrimination.

This is now a serious issue. We have received confirmed information that a federal lawsuit against the Korean run TKD Federation is now being prepared alleging restraint of trade and predatory trade practices based on the fact that the art is a business as well as being a sport. We also hear that similar movements are being brought to life in other countries such as Italy. Keep tuned.

Dear Mark, Yes we do use the WUKO rules and we have large competitions annually for the last 25 years. For many years the USAKF was a member of WUKO and I was the Chairman of the WUKO World Referee Council and the president of the Pan American Union and later the 1st VP of WUKO. I retired from that position in 1995 and the USAKF left the Olympic movement to work on developing karate out of the restriction of the USOC. She won 2 golds and 1 silver in the Kentucky Blue Grass Games. She studies under Sensei Cameron Robertson at Karate Fitness Academy in Northern Kentucky. She is very athletic generally, and participates in volley ball for 10 weeks out of the year in addition to her Karate studies. Danielle is a very good student within the top 10 percent in her class. Excels in advanced placement classes and is of good moral character. My question to you good folks is. Can you suggest a University where she can continue her pursuit of Karate excellence as well? I am wondering about the National Team that was described in your Web page? How would one qualify? Are there karate competitions for the collegiate level. Dear John, You got to be kidding. A fist is hand closely gripped shut, a punch is a pushed out blow with that hand, and inside block is a parry with to the side opposite the parrying limb, and a front kick is a kick to the front. That is all there is to it.

Hello Hanshi Anderson, So you don't have to scroll to the bottom of this note to find out who has written to you, this is Mike Talkington. We met at the USJJF gathering in Reno last April. You asked me to find out if there is any significance in the different width of the red and white panels on the belt. After working every resource I could find, I have yet to find anything except the manufacturers methods. One manufacturer might make them each 4" while another makes them 3" for red and 4" for white. Some of the people I consulted on this are students of martial arts history and I trust their word. It took me this long to get back to you because I had to have surgery for cancer on May 20. My upper left jaw had a squamos cell tumor where the wisdom tooth used to be. The surgeon had to remove the upper left jaw and that left a large hole between my mouth and my sinuses. After healing from the surgery for about 5 weeks I had to undergo radiation therapy. I finished with my radiation therapy just last week and I am now healing. Your condition sounds awful but several people I have met have succeeded in beating it, and many Veterans had sever injuries like yours and now it is not apparent. Keep up your spirits and keep studying the arts. For the color belt, I do believe that the shrinking or the white to complete red was told to me by Masafumi Suzuki, 10th Okinawan Goju-ryu and confirmed by Sadaki Nakabayashi, 8th dan Kodokan Judo. The red and white start at 6th dan where they are equal and shrink about one half inch each dan further. My final belt is gold metallic with a red stripe and was given me by GM Suzuki. A full red belt may be worn at 8th or 9th dan but usually is reserved for 9th or 10th dan. Of course, in the American system, many dans "hunch" on the titles and signs of grade and assume what the thing they will be and can get away with now. Honesty, integrity, and loyalty are often shown the door.

My 11 year old sons Karate school closed it's doors in May without notifying it's students. The only option they offer is to travel more than 15 miles to another dojo in a high traffic area where parking is a nightmare. If we wanted him to attend classes there we would have signed him up at that school in the first place. This school, AMERICAN STATES KARATE ASSOCIATION, also hired inexperienced (purple belt, and an ex wrestler who was "awarded a black belt " after only a few weeks training, to teach my son, who is a green belt. We paid them $1995 for a black belt membership, that he will now not receive. The president, MR. DAVID FRICKS, is unwilling to refund us part of our fee so that we can continue training at a convenient location. They have also been dishonest about their reason for closing our local school by stating (in writing) that their lease expired and was not renewable. An attorney discovered they actually own the building. My son is very upset that he may need to "start over" with his training and says he feels he threw away 7 years, and that it didn't count if he has to step back to a white or an orange belt. He was very talented and dedicated to his study of the martial arts, and I am turning to ANYONE who may help me with this tragic situation. I think it is a crime for this company to have put monetary gain before the ethics that we believed Karate stood for. I would appreciate your comments and assistance should you find time to respond. Dear Jana, You are right to be angry about this situation. It is true that when a business fails it cannot stay open or honor its previous commitments, but in the arts, it seems to me that the instructor should make arrangement with some other nearby school to take over the business and care for the students. This is one reason why those looking for instruction in the arts should be certain that the school of their choice is a member of a strong organization that will issue the proper guarantees if one of their schools fail. I am not referring to national organization like the USAKF but to style groups under a master instructor. In that light, what does this failed teacher's master instructor have to say about the situation? Let me know.

Dear Mr. Anderson, Thank you for taking the time to respond to my letter. The owner of the business is not offering anything to any of us other than to attend training sessions at another location some 30 minutes away. They do not feel we are due any type of refund because, the school had to close because the lease was non renewable, which is not true because they in fact own the building. And their stand is that we should be training at the main school anyway because it offers more. THEY feel the closure of the original school is for the betterment of all students, yet no one even took the time to contact any of us and let us know what our options were or that they were closing it's doors and when? We are currently seeking assistance through the BBB and will, if necessary take appropriate legal steps. Since we still had approximately 7 years before my son was even eligible for his black belt, I am only asking to receive half of the membership fee to be refunded and will apply that toward his new lessons in taekwon-do. We already have a new facility with high recommendations and in light of the way were have been treated (and there are about 12 of us in the "same boat") I would not feel comfortable sending him to the other school, it is too far away and that is not where we signed our boy up in the first place. I do have one question for you, out of all of the organizations, federations and associations I have contacted how can it be that no one has EVER even heard of this "renowned" instructor David Fricks, nor have they ever heard of American States Karate Association. I would assume somewhere I could get some type of feedback on these people unless of course they are not the accredited facility they represent themselves to be. Could you offer some direction where I might check to see if they in fact have any credentials? When I checked on my sons new instructor it took one letter and I received excellent referrals on him. I have a mediation meeting with the owner of the company Monday and will be going head to head with him to find some type of resolution. If that does not resolve anything I guess we will all get together and decide what further steps we must take. I also have an interview with a news channel here in Portland to try to explain to the public what to look for and what to beware of when they are considering signing up for a membership at a martial arts studio. I hope this will help others and avoid a potential situation like I am in. I also know that when a business operates unethically as I feel this one has, it can damage the reputations of many other companies that operate in the same field. I think it is important for others to know that there are some very reputable.

Dear Diana, For some time I was of the opinion think that Karate would not be an Olympic Sport anytime in the close future and maybe not at all. The sport is too diversified and Taekwondo seems to hold the center--perhaps the Olympic martial arts masterminds will include karate kata? However, the World Karate Federation (WKF) has a dynamic new president from Spain, Antonio Espinos (who I know very well) who speaks directly to the president of the IOC, and who knows how to use the financial assets of the WKF for a public relations advantage. Furthermore, it appears that Dr. Un Yung Kim, the IOC member and head of Taekwondo is weakening and may make further alliances toward karate. For the next Olympics in Australia, Karate in out, Taekwondo is in. For the following Games in Athens, Pankreation (a form of shoot-fighting or combat Jiu-jitsu) has been asked for instead of Karate. That leave the next Olympics, nearly 10 years away, as the only possibility. Olympic style karate is a tough sport to put on the TV because of the constant interruptions of the matches. There is a now famous aphorism of mine in common use from the time when I was head of the World Referee Council of WUKO (now WKF), which states: "The purpose of a karate referee is to stop the match whenever things get interesting." I know hear that in Seoul, the IOC has granted karate full recognition again and that it is approved for future competition. We don't know what that means but it sounds good. However, it will still be far away. We just have to be content with the Pan American Games for the near future.

In one of my many internet "surfing" sessions, I came across your page. It sure does bring back a lot of memories. I studied under Larry Feldman what seemed like forever (at least 13 years). I also trained with David Ames, and my others. I dropped out to pursue my other "sport," bodybuilding. I know many have karate "clubs" but I don't know if they are official sports that might offer scholarship potential. It sounds like your daughter is quite an athlete and is a great student. At the moment, the only universities that I know of where there is really a strong intercollegiate karate competition program and scholarships are in California. Around here, there are good programs at most major schools such as my University of Akron, Cornell, Ohio State, etc., but they are merely classes and clubs.

I am a Registered Dietitian, and am inquiring about the type of exercise Karate is classified as. Is it considered aerobic or anaerobic exercise? Also, does the degree of exercise change dependent on the belt you attain? I facilitate a weight loss program and am trying to team up with a Dojo, but first need more info about Karate and the pathways used. Can you recommend any readings or peer reviewed journal articles? Dear Theresa, Karate has many, many faces and can be aerobic or anaerobic depending on the course purpose and the teacher. Some basic variances of Karate courses are: Self-defense - Meditation and stress control - Conflict resolution - Physical conditioning - Athletic competition - Law-enforcement crisis intervention - Law-enforcement felon control - Institutional crisis interruption - Religious studies or Oriental philosophy. It is widely believed that the present forms of aerobics as taught in the various heath centers were based on the originators observance of karate classes. In our basic courses, we vary the class goals to fit the age group and try to stress the first five of the listed objectives. In athletic competition, the process of patterned breathing is in line with aerobic planning but as the matches last only several minutes, the best actions are quick and of an anaerobic nature. So there you have it. The type of training desired vs. the application of technique. The applications are anaerobic but the training is best when it contains the high prolonged pulse beat necessary to great physical conditioning. The best way to choose a school is to observe the classes, noting poorly conditioned students, poorly conditioned teachers, and if the place has mats on the floor with might indicate less that vigorous workouts for those that have not to strong feet.

Dear Anthony, We have had as many as 200,000 member included in our clubs and about 7,000 competing athletes, registering every year for insurance purposes. Counting in the same manner as many Olympic Sports bodies, we have about 35,000 at this time. The growth rate has been firm for about 20 year at about 5%. Now we are holding firm but expect a surge in operations. The difference is the sport vs recreational athletics. All sports competitors register individually, the recreational athletes register within the groups. The difference between our organization and others is that our members are members, not must those with whom we have met and who have pledged casual support. I hope this answers your question. Now I have some questions. Where are you from and why did you want to know?

Tomosa Bu Jitsu is a 700 year old Japanese family that incorporates joint locks, for throws and submission, punches and kicks, for empty handed defense, and the short staff and sword as weapons. I studied with Grand Master Tomosa Akiro from 1966 to his death in 1993. The style is a mix of soft and hard styles. The joint locks and throws include both body and clothing manipulation similar to Aikido and Aiki-Jujitsu. From watching and studying other styles, I believe that the empty handed defense is most similar to Kyokushin, although it also has similarities to Shodokan. In the late 1700's and early 1800's several members of the family apparently lived in the area of the Philippines, and adapted much of the Filipino, and some of the Indonesian, martial arts to the style. I have continued that since my wife is from Cebu. Can you provide information on joining, or establishing affiliation, USAKF.

This system of karate is not known by many people. My teacher, Sam Pearson, was a Marine and learned Watai in Gotemba, Japan in the mid -1950 s. Very little is known about the history of this style. I can find no written history on it anywhere. Mr. Pearson learned it from someone named Watai Kanjo. Watai Kanjo’s father formed the style from several other systems. Mr. Pearson was transferred away from Japan around 1957 or 1958. He returned later to visit Watai Kanjo but could not locate him. I am now searching for anyone that knows anything about Watai Karate. I have a question. The answer will help settle a conservation that happened at my house a few nights ago. Person #1 insists that when they took karate in the 70’s that there were only three belts, white, brown, and black. They say they tested three times for white, when they felt they were ready they tested three times for brown and three times for black. Person #2 insists that there is no form of karate that only has three belts. Yet Person #1 insists there is or was at one point. I remember in the early 80’s my nephews who were 6 at the time took karate and started with white, went to yellow then I believe it was orange. I don’t pretend to know anything about karate other than having gone to watch the twins over ten years ago. But I can see how perhaps at some point other belts were added to make people feel like they were accomplishing the sport. Kids especially need affirmation that they are doing well. I would greatly appreciate finding out the history of karate belts. I haven't been able to find anything on the internet.

Dear Naomi, When I entered Karate in the fifties there was only white, brown, and black. They were split into 6 Kyus, 4 for white and 2 for brown. In TKD in the early sixties there was yellow, red, and black belt divided into 7 kups. The 10 kyus originated in a meeting at Jhoon Rhee’s house in the late sixties. Hanshi Anderson, So you don’t have to scroll to the bottom of this note to find out who has written to you, this is Mike Talkington. We met at the USJJF gathering in Reno last April. You asked me to find out if there is any significance in the different width of the red and white panels on the belt. After working every resource I could find, I have yet to find anything except the manufacturers methods. One manufacturer might make them each 4” while another makes them 3” for red and 4” for white. Some of the people I consulted on this are students of martial arts history and I trust their word. It took me this long to get back to you because I had to have surgery for cancer on May 20. My upper left jaw had a squamos cell tumor where the wisdom tooth used to be. The surgeon had to remove the upper left jaw and that left a large hole between my mouth and my sinuses. After healing from the surgery for about 5 weeks I had to undergo radiation therapy. I finished with my radiation therapy just last week and I am now healing. I have not had a very good time since we met, but I am getting better now. Your friend, Mike

Dear Mike, Your condition sounds awful but several people I have met have succeeded in beating it, and many Veterans had sever injuries like yours and now it is not apparent. Keep up your spirits and keep studying the arts. For the color belt, I do believe that the shrinking or the white to complete red was told to me by Masafumi Suzuki, 10th Okinawan Goju-ryu and confirmed by Sadaki Nakabayashi, 8th dan Kodokan Judo. The red and white start at 6th dan where they are equal and shrink about one half inch each dan further. My final belt is gold metallic with a red stripe and was given me by GM Suzuki. A full red belt may be worn at 8th or 9th dan but usually is reserved for 9th or 10th dan. Of course, in the American system, many dans “hunch” on the titles and signs of grade and assume what the thing they will be and can get away with now. Honesty, integrity, and loyalty are often shown the door.

I am a Registered Dietitian, and am inquiring about the type of exercise Karate is classified as. Is it considered aerobic or anaerobic exercise? Also, does the degree of exercise change dependent on the belt you attain? I facilitate a weight loss program and am trying to team up with a Dojo, but first need more info about Karate and the pathways used. Can you recommend any readings or peer reviewed journal articles?

Dear Theresa, Karate has many, many faces and can be aerobic or anaerobic depending on the course purpose and the teacher. Some basic variances of Karate courses are: Self-defense -- Meditation and stress control -- Conflict resolution -- Physical conditioning -- Athletic competition -- Law-enforcement crisis intervention Law-enforcement - felon control -- Institutional crisis interruption -- Religious studies/Oriental philosophy

It is widely believed that the present forms of aerobics as taught in the various heath centers were based on the originators observance of karate classes. In our basic courses, we vary the class goals to fit the age group and try to stress the first five of the listed objectives. In athletic competition, the process of patterned breathing is in line with aerobic planning but as the matches last only several minutes, the best actions are quick and of an anaerobic nature. So there you have it. The type of training desired vs. the application of technique. The applications are anaerobic but the training is best when it contains the high prolonged pulse beat necessary to great physical conditioning. The best way to choose a school is to observe the classes, noting poorly conditioned students, poorly conditioned teachers, and if the place has mats on the floor with might indicate less that vigorous workouts for those that have not to strong feet.

August 20, 1999 -- The USA Karate National Championships --Were highly successful and went off without a hitch because of great support from KMK personnel. The Chanbara competition (whapping and whacking weapons), ably run by Shihan Dana Abbott, proved a real hit with our younger members and we will institute it in our dojos soon. It provides a measure of relief from the too serious “about to be had” competition attitude, besides being just plain fun. The USAKF Nationals was not as large as usual because of the stiff competition from tournaments scheduled at nearly the same time, to wit: The USA-NKF Championship in Charleston, WV, The US Karate-ka Kai Championship in Peoria, IL, the US Karate Alliance Championship in New Orleans, the AAU Nationals and the AAU Junior Olympics in Cleveland, OH.

August 20, 1999 -- Various National Championships

The USA-NKF Championship in Charleston, WV was well managed by Roger Jarrett who showed great courtesy to Hanshi Anderson during his visit there. The Federation even gave him a plaque, albeit not especially handsome. Hanshi says the only truly irritating thing there was his being forced to sit beside the “purveyor of skewed news” - Howard High, manager of the Cyber-Dojo where semi-slanderous articles are posted such as the one skewering the USA-NKF president, Julius Thiry, who treated Hanshi Anderson amiably and with due respect. This organization has potential but really must change direction and stop being so confrontational and hoity-toity. Shihan Pat Byrnes again proved himself to be a coaching genius with the stunning competitive performances of his students, Adam Older and Kimberly Morgan. Our good friend, Doug Selchan broke his foot in the competitions and it appeared that the match between Jim Buchen and Manny Fonseca came to an un-understandable conclusion. All this is normal in the USA but the following is not. For some reason unbeknown to us, the USA-NKF graded several of their personnel with some demeaning results. However they are arrived at, Americans value and cherish their dan grades, and most will stand up for the right to be recognize at what they think they are. But, it appears that this is not so if the price is right. - Such as the right to be a coach in the “special” organization. It appears that nothing is so sweet as being called upon to teach someone else’s students, thus showing clearly the lack of knowledge of the original instructor and the supreme importance of the newly hired tutor. Or so it seems. A market economy is the American way but degrading karate masters has yet to arrive to the divine status granted the Educational Testing Association to ordinary public schools. The USA-NKF in its great authority and wisdom, and with the acceptance of the slaughtered lambs (a figure of speech) reduced Ridgely Abele, the head of their Coaching Committee to 6th Dan, and coaches Jimmy Blann to 5th Dan and Edward Kuras to 5th Dan. Quite a comedown for these men. Wonder what they will do with Tokey Hill?

August 20, 1999 -- -- Hanshi Anderson and Dr. Dunphy left the USA-NFK for a brief trip to Peoria and the meetings and banquet of the US Karate-Ka Kai (USKK), run by the close friend of Anderson, Grandmaster Phillip Koeppel. As usual the affair was grand. This group is a true leader in the revival of Okinawan karate in the USA.

August 20, 1999 -- -- The USKA-PSDI (United States Karate Assn. Police Self-Defense Instructors Liaison), has been revived drawing on its illustrious past. Hanshi Anderson has been as is the International Director, but in the near future the Liaison Command will move to Reno, Nevada, the new home of US Ju-Jitsu. At this reunion, Sheriff Larry Overholt (Shihan) of Ashland County and Buckeye State Sheriffs Assn. Director for NE Ohio was awarded the Officer-of-the-Year for 1998, and the new Louis Dirker, Jr. Chief of Police for Cuyahoga Fall, OH, KMK Black Belt and former Marine, was named Officer-of-the-Year for 1999. Law Enforcement notables honored were: Larry E. Overholt, Sheriff, Ashland County, OH, OH, Louis Dirker, Jr., Chief of Police, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Cedric Barksdale, NYPD New York, Richard Staver, FBI (Ret), Charles L. Plaines, Security Consultant Agency, Lt. Robert E. Utsey, NYPD (Ret), and Dr. Delbert Rounds, Professor of Police Science.

August 20, 1999 -- David Mitchell, the former Treasurer of WUKO and Executive Director of the British Martial Arts Commission, was present at the entire event, and stayed at Hanshi Anderson’s home. Dr. Mitchell, a world-renown martial arts writer from England and was a major support of Hanshi Anderson during his many years of duty with WUKO. David now publishes a internet magazine called Roundhouse, at http://www.roundhousemag.com. This is an excellent publication and I strongly suggest that you tune in.

August 20, 1999 -- Sensei Dan Passerini (a nidan with Shihan Dunphy's dojo) successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in Biochemistry at the University of Akron on Thursday June 3. Dr. Passerini's dissertation was titled "The Synthesis and Characterization or a Novel Class of Diazeniumdiolates as Nitric Oxide Carriers in the Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension." Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a debilitating and often fatal disorder afflicting tens of thousands annually. Dr. Passerini's new molecules have a good chance of eventually reaching clinical trials, and may become the standard for treatment for PH. Dr. Passerini is a 1994 graduate of Walsh University (B.S. Biology, 3.98 GPA). Congratulations Sensei Passerini!

August 20, 1999. -- Once again, the leader of our system has been able to succinctly and accurately identify the fundamentals needed for advanced thinking and advanced training. Hanshi Anderson has been giving regular monthly workshops that you should definitely not miss. The seminars last two to three hours and are real jewels. Subjects covered so far: The five Heian Kata, Bassai Dai, and Jion were dissected to illuminate the key elements and focus points for truly gaining the value of the kata as preparatory forms for the more advanced training involved with Jion, Bassai and other kata. The lesson on spinal alignment, muscle relaxation, proper trajectories, body expansion and contraction, proper weapon formation, gait awareness and removal of unneeded energy transference were masterfully presented in a Socratic learning format. My son Daniel (9 years old ) trains under a form of Karate called Go-Kan-Ryu here in the UK. I am a bit concerned about this as they don't have to do Katas until they are 13 or up to green belt. Is this normal? Also it appears to me that when the main instructor (Sensei) is not there, they are being trained by a sensei that is possibly lower than green belt. I cant tell exactly as they wear black belts with a white stripe down the middle. Do you think this is normal? Hope you can help me with some info.

I have never heard of the Go-Kan-Ryu in the UK or anywhere else for that matter but one of the roots of karate is kata, in all the styles that I have known, which is just about all of any importance. Low grade students cannot carry the title of Sensei and even higher Black Belts are not entitled to the designation just because they teach. I would suggest that you find out who the head of the style is and where he learned and query them. I would also suggest that if you don't like unqualified instructors you should change school. What you have described to me is often normal but nonetheless, unacceptable.

June 22, 1999 -- More comments about the USOC and the USANKF. from Maki Okada,---Thank you, sir, for replying to my questions. I understand that nearly EVERY karate organization claims USOC sanctioning, etc. etc...I DO realize your history in the sport, as well as your accomplishments. I am sure you are well aware that this is the FIRST year that the Pan American Games will be awarding MEDALS for karate - a great accomplishment. Each and every person who made a contribution in any way is to be applauded. I wasn't intending to "strike a chord" with you, nor do I have any animosity towards you. Let's all pull together now that the NKF has the sanctioning from the USOC, as well as the IOC and see how far we can promote the sport. For your information, we were members of the USAKF also at one time, and do understand the structure of the organization then as well as now. We choose to go with the organization who is recognized by the USOC - if it changes, we most likely will also. Thank you for your time, and looking forward to seeing you in West Virginia for the NKF Nationals, July 9 - 11.

Reply from the USAKF-- Thanks for the note and we have some further comments. What in the world makes you believe "that nearly EVERY karate organization claims USOC sanctioning, etc. etc." We sure don't and we don't know any other except the AAU (a Class B USOC member) who would even want to. And for pulling together, that idea was put to bed in the aftermath of the Pan American Games recognition. To the contrary, we believe that karate must be place into an ethical background, and at this moment we believe that control of competition by big money defeats that premise. Constant lawsuits are a product of big money and have no place in the excellence of the arts. The USAKNF is now under the protection of the US Olympic Committee who must defend it against lawsuits of different kinds. The USAKF lost that protection for a brief interval because of the loss of International Olympic Committee recognition by the World Karate Federation. Because of the personal harassment we encountered and the likelihood of further discomfort and disturbance to our families and dojos, we declined to pursue re-recognition from the USOC then, and we still have no interest in that mess. The results of the judgment made by the USOC have definitely put off the idea of "unification of American karate." The USAKf is quite content to be where it is and others can pursue their goals as they wish. For the international competition, the World Karate Confederation is quite fine and without the politics. The first time karate was in the games, the PUKO was a full member of the PASO and as such, fully participated in the games. The winners of the competition got medals, and I am certain that they will not give them back. We do not believe that the National Governing Body will change, who will contest it? The USAKF is not at all interested in the new breed of politicos. We are solely interested in karate, and the values derived therefrom. Our organization stresses good feeling, inter-cooperation of the arts, and the family structure of the dojos. We will not waste our time with sterile travel or sit in lifeless meeting if we can help it, and especially if there are no important goals to be accomplished. Furthermore, it is inane to sacrifice the internal development of our members on the altar of a brief moment of notoriety if the beneficiaries of the sacrifice could care less, and express no appreciation or loyalty for the results from which they benefit. We did a great job and we will continue in that line. Others must draw on our accomplishments, and let's see what they can do now.

June 11, 1999 --About the International Olympic Committee (IOC) This comment reaches us from John R. Leahy -- brightboy@webtv.net Regarding the invitation to the National we sent out -- this reply reached us about the International Olympic Committee (IOC). We find it sharp as the proverbial "dagger in the back." We said: "As you know, we changed our mission from representing the complicated bureaucracy of the Olympic Committee."

The reply ..... That's an overly kind euphemism for a bunch of drooling morons whose mantra is: Lie, Cheat, Steal! The Olympic Ideal exists only in the sacrifice and achievement of the athlete. The IOC (idiots on crack) was a disgrace under the stewardship of the racist Avery Brundage and has devolved into a cesspool of commercialization and corruption in the Samaranch era. I spent a week in Atlanta for the Judo, and while the competition was fantastic, the IOC was uncaring, untruthful, and unseemly. I will never send them another penny! I'm glad to hear you've given up wasting your energy with that gaggle of miscreants. Good luck with the tournament!

May 14, 1999 -- Questioning USAKF claims to directing the approval of Karate into the Pan American Games -

Comment ---With all due respect, the USAKF did not bring karate into the Pan American Games, as claimed on your web page. The USANKF received the international sanctioning from the IOC, and anyone wanting to participate in the event must come in through the USANKF. How can a sport such as karate misrepresent such facts? I am appalled at the freedom taken to boldly take credit for victory. What have you to say for yourselves? -- Maki Okada

Our response ---Well- I say boo to you! - and that you don't know what you are talking about. In the beginning was the USAKF, not the USANKF. Julius Thiry was only the chairman of the USAKF Referee Council and I was the president of the USAKF. I personally engineered the operations and gave the speeches that got karate accepted into the ODECABE, OCADESU,. and ODESUR - the regional ODEPA organizations which permitted us to join the ODEPA (PASO), the Pan American Games Organization. I was also the president of the Pan American (PUKO) Karate Union and a Board Member of the USOC, as well as being the 1st vice-president of the WUKO (WKF). I attended the meeting where karate was entered into the games, and at the first showing of karate in Argentina, I gave the welcoming speech and was the leading karate dignitary of the games in the capacity of the President of the PUKO. Almost all of the ranking personnel of the USANKF were member of the USAKF and most still are. It is true that the USANKF now represents the USOC but it is also true that it does not have the history, the USAKF does, and the USANKF only represents a very small group in the United States. I will be attending the USANKF championship in West Virginia and if you like, you can see me personally and tell me I am wrong. It wouldn't be the first time some one said that - they said it was impossible to make the games, but the USAKF accomplished that and everyone involved will forever benefit. What hurts is that people like you do not recognize the great accomplishments that have been made by people not now in political power, but thankfully, you don't write the history. The history of the USANKF is the USAKF and the history of Julius Thiry is the USAKF, that is except for his "Ph.D."----Regards, George Anderson

May 14, 1999 -- John Nanay's Tournament in Chicago The tournament was well run and had great competition. It was run by John Nanay, Mike, Nanay, Jim Caldwell, Dr. Mike Dunphy. The great champion, Doug Selchen, form Pennsylvania was there also. The tournament was uneventful politically, John Nanay's will be coming to Canton, as will Caldwell. The Kwanmukan athletes won many division, we brought home 23 trophies (10 first place advanced divisions, and 6 first place in kyu). Nikki Pyles was awarded the Art Battin Most Spirited Competitor Plaque, an annual award named after the late young athlete. Matt Kincaid did compete again this year, and he won all of his divisions, including fighting.

Question ---Could you please tell me what is happening on the sanctioning of karate for the Olympics? Can we expect it for 2004 in Greece? And why do your messages to read only go up to 1998? An entire year has passed with no messages? Hard to believe. We enjoy reading them and want more I was just reading your TEAM USA page, showing how proud you were of being instrumental in securing the USOTC for athletes, then read the message board how unfair it is to require athletes making the team to attend these trainings. USAKF Response --- The Olympics are out for karate right now for a multitude of reasons, and perhaps in for Pankreation. Karate is not a good spectator sport and if you don't believe that , just look at the tapes of the World Jujitsu (IJJF) competition, it beats the pants off karate and will undoubtedly attract the needed sponsors. As you know, karate has none. For the lack of news, we were lax with the postings while we set up the new site but now we will be more active, You noticed, of course that the sites are now rearranged. For the team funding, we think that now that the USANKF has help from the Olympic Committee they should live up to their promises to fully fund the USA Team. They promised that when we decided not to contest for the awarding of the NGB for karate.

And we are not from Bellingham, WA and do not have current connections to Julius Thiry? We have different viewpoints on the current status of karate in the USA.

We are proud of having had the opportunity to do something important, almost impossible to do, and then doing it. As General Patton said, he wanted to lead an army into a desperate and crucial battle against overwhelming odds - he felt it was his destiny to emerge victorious. I felt the same way, and we too won a victory against overwhelming odds. Perhaps I read too many William Stearns Davis books, i.e.- The Victor of Salamis, The Beauty of the Purple to name a few. We think that one problem in karate in the USA is that the athletes in this country face special problems quite rare throughout the world. The work ethic here requires an uninterrupted school time and if you are employed, that you stay on the job. The athletes have a constant battle with administrators and employers to get time to attend the events. One week is usually permitted, but if you have to fight for two weeks and then three. it is frowned upon. Furthermore, young athletes find it is hard to make a living and really have to dedicate their resources toward education and training. Now, when we were still striving to get into the games, we faced opposing priorities and, at the time, it seemed that the guiding interest demanded that we use our resources to achieve the Pan American Games. If we could not make the Games at that time, it would have had a devastating impact on karate here in the United States. Consequently, we were not able to help the athletes as much as some people thought we should. When we reached the games, these people in the USAKF formed an alternative dissident group, which used the promise of athletic support to great advantage. These people now govern karate and where is that athletic support? We do not complain about squad sessions, but under the USOC all athletes are not equal. Going to Colorado Springs is not easy or inexpensive for people living in the East. Going to team Trials, State championships, regional and national tournaments, international tournament, and then to numerous team sessions place an unbearable burden on the athlete. Those who have time and money make the team and those who can win but have neither time nor money are excluded. If the goal is to win, the method is wrong, and we will not succeed. Furthermore, to escape the problem, administrators exclude the direct instructor of the athletes and place coaches unfamiliar with the athletes in change. When that doesn't work, they change coaches, promising better results with the new one. Another worrisome matter is the introduction of foreign nationals into our competition team operations. We do not agree that the best interests of the US karate are served by the elevation of alien karate masters over that resident in the United States. The upshot of all this is that the athletes got good under their private teacher and to be better, they do not need a temporary teacher in the guise of a coach ? and when they depart from the team, they should not be sadder, wiser, poorer, and less able to earn a sound living as a professional in their chosen field. Of course, all those Ph.D.s who have never defended a dissertation nor attended a college to earn an accredited degree, and who earn their living through whatever- will tell you whatever suits their private interest. Well, this commentary went on too long but you struck a chord.

May 6, 1999 -- West Virginia Kwanmukan News - Shihan (Rev.) Raymond Jones is expanding his dojo structure in West Virginia and his son David has now completed Marine Corp basic training. Stephen and Daniel Jones are now married and out of the house as we sympathize with Raymond on the departure of his three sons; he still sees them a lot but I am he and his and misses them at the house.

April 31, 1999 -- Canadian Tournament Report -- Dr. Mike Dunphy and Coach Ray Sprankle took a team representing the Kwanmukan and the USAKF to a tournament in Canada's Owen Sound (about 2 hours west of Toronto), directed by Don Meech, the president of Ron Yamanaka's YKKF organization. They are planning to bring a Canadian group for the nationals and to attend the Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday. The Kwanmukan group was ten competitors from the Canton CMA and their families. The tournament had about 350 competitors, all of whom were Canadians; about 75% were from YKKF related schools. Our team was first from the USA to compete since the championship started 10 years ago. All agreed that Owen Sound is a beautiful place and that the people great. April 27, 1999 -- News from the reconstituted US Ju-Jitsu Federation. The USAKF has always "mother-henned" the US Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJ ) but at the last meeting of the USAKF, the Board of Directors voted to move the USJJ (US Ju-Jitsu Federation) Headquarters to Reno, Nevada where the new president, Lt.Col Bruce Bethers (US Army) resides. Bruce is also representing the USA Karate and the Kwanmukan in the States of Nevada. Hanshi Anderson remains the Chairman of the Central Technical Division of the newly reconstituted USJJ. The "new" USJJ had a national meeting & seminar in Reno at the same time as the International Congress in Israel. As both President Bethers and Hanshi Anderson were required in Reno for meetings and to instruct at the seminar, Shihan Jeff Ellis from Strongsville, Ohio represented the USJJ (the sole USA member federation) at the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF). The lucky gut took time to visit the Holy City along with his diplomatic duties. Included in his report is the important note that the JJIF is expecting word that Ju-jitsu has been included on the list of the International Olympic Committee officially recognized sports.

April 10, 1999 -- Hanshi Anderson had a great seminar in Worcester, Mass at Shihan Jim Del Garbino's new dojo. The students had a lot of fun sparring with the new chest protectors . With the new activity, Shihan Ames has been having great success with his in-dojo Shiais and Hanshi Anderson is teaching a sparring class at 7:30 pm Tuesday and Thursdays at the Kenmore CMA - the fighting is tough and getting back down to weight. the difference between this type of sparring and the traditional WKF is the encouraged use of the side-kick. They are getting hare and quick and the fighting is sharpening noticeably.

April 10, 1999 -- The Death of Thomas LaPuppet You have probably heard by now that the Treasurer of the USAKF and President of USAKF of NY, Thomas LaPuppet Carroll, died on Saturday, March 20, 1999. There was no funeral because he wanted to be cremated. However there was a memorial service Wednesday March 31, at Hanson Place Central United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, NY. Some personnel attending were: USAKF President Anderson (Akron, OH) and General Secretary Caldwell (Omaha, NE); Michael Grave (Delaware) Roger Jarrett, USNKF General Secretary (St. Albans, WV), Carmel Sorrento, Bernard Scarda, Alex Sternberg, Chuck Merriman, Rick Lenchus, and Joyce Santamaria in addition to Shihan LaPuppet's personal student, family, and family friends. The church was full. There was a short reception after the service.

David Mitchell, the noted English writer and Past-Treasurer of The World Union of Karatedo Organizations (WUKO), stopped by to see Hanshi Anderson at his home. After a great career with WUKO, Mitchell went back to school to study theology. He then moved to California and eventually married a girl from Akron (would you believe it) and moved to Covington, KY where he now lives. David really knows about world karate and it is a real pleasure to see him again and go over old time. Mitchell was also the Director of the British Martial Arts Commission.

March 1, 1999 --Pat Hickey runs ADDH Program ---Correspondent Cecil Glitz of The Record-Courier Ravenna-Kent, Ohio reports: "Local man's coaching helps ADHD students excel." Jim Winkleman of Suffield is a third degree black belt in Kwanmuzendokai, licensed massage therapist and certified martial arts coach who understands pain firsthand. However, he has turned his pain into the gain of his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder students through martial arts and his own experience.Due to a traffic accident, six years ago, Winkleman was forced to change careers. As part of his recovery, he underwent massage therapy for over a year and developed an interest in this method of healing. He receiving his license and learned how the body and mind work and how to connect the two: learning how to use movement with the body to help the brain function better. During this time his son was diagnosed with ADHD. Due to the hereditary nature of ADHD Winkleman recognized some of those same symptoms in himself. Besides having a short attention span. He noticed that he, too, was impulsive, distractible and bothered by improper sleep cycles. Now he had added incentive in understanding, and applying body movement to brain function. Winkleman explained that research has proven that the complex problem solving patterns of how to do things, basically exercising the brain itself, creates more dendrites that improve brain capacity to communicate form one side to the other, known a corss-lateralization. People with ADHD often live most of their lives from the right side of their brain. Winkleman, who can identify with his pupils, coaches a specifically designed therapeutic martian arts program for ADHD youngsters ranging in age from 5 to 18 years at Hickey's Karate Center in Stow. Class size ranges form 10-20 kids, lasting from 2-2/ 1/2 hours Classes include a parent support and counseling group at the same time which helps parents to better interact with their children. This martial arts class is taught in conjunction with some other interesting learning strategies. During the 2-2 1/2 hour period, students spend part of their time receiving instruction in typing for cross lateralization and signing for building and developing language pathways, using mind and fingers to exercise both sides of the brain. --There is also continual emphasis on and practice of social skills. All instruction, other than martial arts, is under the supervision of Peter Di Mezza, director of the Center for Creative Learning, in Akron. Beginning this summer, both the martial arts and the educational facets of this therapeutic approach for ADHD kids will be combined in a pilot program called the Summit Academy Community School for Alternative Learners Winkleman teaches his students through martial arts how to deal with frustrating, hurtful and maddening situations, not with their fists, but with their thoughts. The ultimate goal is never to have to fight. He teaches them how to set goals through preparation and practice. "I stress that each child does his/her best," emphasizes the coach. As they learn the art part of martial arts, they start learning self-discipline and self-control. They start learning how to focus." "Kata" is a choreographed imaginary fight, something you do by yourself against imaginary attackers. It's prearranged. You know exactly what moves to do because you know the exact tact that is coming at you. Students are taught how to do this so the fear of being self-conscience is gone when they are asked to perform in front of others. ---Winkleman summarized by saying, "This class is to teach the kids how to stop the fight inside."

March 1, 1999 -- USAKF National Meeting The USA Karate Federation recently held its National Meetings at the National Office in Akron, Ohio. It looks like a great 25 th year Anniversary National Championship is underway. Regarding the Officers of the USAKF, there were some surprises. Shihan Patrick Hickey has been replaced as the General Secretary by Maj. James Caldwell --Caldwell as Referee Chairman by Patrick Hickey, Brian Pendleton was elected Assistant Treasurer. There are no changes in the office of the President and Treasurer until such time as the seriously ill present treasurer can no longer function as such, when Brian Pendleton will ascend to Treasurer. Shihan Patrick Byrnes is the Head of Coaching and is putting together at team for the World Karate Confederation (WKC) World Championships to be held in Germany this June.

March 1, 1999 -- Honors for Dr. Brian Pendleton --From the University of Akron Bulletin - -Dr. Brian Pendleton, sociology, co-wrote "Socioeconomic and Use of Family Planning Among Ghanaian Government Workers," which was published in Social Biology. He also co-presented "Partnerships for Substance Abuse Prevention" at the National Workshop for Community Coalitions, Centers for Substance Abuse Prevention in Washington DC in March and "Evaluating Local Drug and Alcohol Programs" at the Society for Applied Sociology in Chicago in October. He presented "Academic and Community Partnerships in Medical Education: Transcending Tribal Behavior" at the Generalist in Medical Education Annual Conference in Washington, DC, in November. Pendleton also received $27,450 for the "Drug-free Communities Support Program" from the Summit County Community Partnership as a subgrant of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. He also co-presented " Collaborative Funding: A Patchwork Quilt" at the National Conference on Family Literacy in Louisville. The USA Karate Fed. recently held its National Meetings at KMK Headquarters and there were some surprises.

February 13, 1999 -- Roberto A. Alvelais -- The Twins Have Arrived (Hidden meaning --He used to have money to travel)

Yesterday, at approximately 1:30 pm Pacific time, Gabriella and Teresa Alvelais were delivered by C-section at Stanford University Hospital. Gabby was 6 lb 12 oz and Teresa was 5 lb 12 oz. Mom and Teresa are doing fine. Gabby isn't having as good a time. She's in Newborn ICU because she was having a little bit of trouble breathing. Things look pretty good that she'll be out of NICU by today or tomorrow. The prognosis is that we'll have the entire family home by the end of the Weekend. Rachel Emilia is taking her role as a big sister very well. She was very anxious to see "her babies" and was disappointed that she couldn't see both of them. (she can't go to NICU). She was very sweet with her sister and cuddled with her for a bit last night. It was a very tender sight. Further news as it develops.

Date: 2/21/99 4:41 PM Good News! Gabriella is out of NICU and into "Well Baby." That means that she can stay in the room with Mom and Teresa. She's doing just fine and sleeps a lot. She's eating and is just beautiful. It was such a glorious feeling to be together, all 5 of us, as a family. Everyone safe and sound. What a relief. Rachel and the twins are expected to be home on Monday. Now the adventure begins! Thank you, everyone for all of your good wishes and prayers. We really appreciate them.

February 13, 1999 -- US National Karate Team Problems

A Black Belt from Shihan Byrnes' dojo in Pennsylvania is the number one adult woman's USANKF (Olympic style competition) team competitor in the United States. But she has a problem, she has to go to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado for further training, more training for the Pan American Games, the USANKF Nationals, and then to the Pan American Games. The problem - no money or time to travel. What kid in college can spend on travel that much and miss those many classes. If she does no do it, the second place will go in her place. What happened to all those promises about a fully funded United States (Olympic member) Karate Team. At least for our championships you don't have to miss school - and - the Nationals is right here in Canton, Ohio this year.

By the way, we hear about strange and disturbing goings on at recent official US Team practice in New York. Anything to it?

Athens, 22-12-98 Hellenic Olympic Committee proposes the Artistic Swimming to the IOC for second sport in Olympics 2004.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee decided yesterday to propose to the International Olympic Committee as second sport for demonstration in the Olympics "Athens 2004" the Artistic Swimming and not the Karate of Mr. Yerolimpos. The WHY is obvious: Because, with serious IOC there is only World Karate Federation with equal WUKO and ITKF inside. Because, with the ITKF inside the WKF, there is the Greek Traditional Karate Federation in Greece and Yerolimpos faces the charge of fakery from the GTKF, a thing that Mr. Lambis Nicolaou, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, and Mr. Andreas Fouras, the Underminister of Sports, do not want since Yerolimpos is their "personal favorite" and together they have obvious responsibilities for all this situation. So, they preferred the "soft landing" of the karate selling out. These three persons destroyed the efforts of millions of karate sportsmen all over the world for 100 years !!! But, on the other hand, George Yerolimpos is now exposed to 180 possible prosecusions from equal in number national karate federations, because karate is out of the Olympics 2004, in spite of it is the most popular sport all over the world. The only soothingness for me in such a chagrin and disappointment is that there are equal distributed NO-BRAIN people inside and outside the borders of Greece !!! Indeed, the rising star of George Yerolimpos, that treaded first, on his karate teacher and karate colleagues in order to grasp the Hellenic Amateur Karate Federation (WUKO member), second, on the Greek Traditional Karate Federation (member of the International Traditional Karate Federation) in order to bury the Traditional Karate all over the world (regardless the danger to destroy all the karate movement) and to take all Greek government subvensions to the sport of karate without any logistic control, (but don't forget that GTKF never leaves its rights !!!) third, on Nea Dimokratia (the political minor party) in order to grasp the Underminister of Sports Andreas Fouras (of the political ruling party !!!), fourth, on Hellenic Hockey Federation in order to grasp a chair in the Hellenic Olympic Committee, fifth, on the World Union of Karate-do Organizations in order to have the blind endorsement of the Spanishman president of the today WUKO Mr. Antonio Espinos and of the also Spanishman "magician" of the Olympic Games Mr. Huan Antonio Samaranch, is today very-very ready for the next step. And the next step, but not last, is the employment of Mr. Yerolimpos in an organization such "ATHENS 2004", which will administrate 1,500,000,000,000 drachmas, with a reward of 21,000,000 drachmas per year plus expenses and perks, ten times the salary of a new employee !!!

14 to 17, October 1998, WUKO had its world championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. n the international Congress of the national delegations they had elections for the place of the president and the general secretary. Mr. Espinos from Spain was elected for the place of the president, but Mr. Yerolimpos, candidate for the place of the G.S., was kicked out of the room because some delegations had complains against him for his interference in their national elections. After this, he came back and with the promises that, as a member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, he will be also the Director of the Olympics-Athens 2004 and he will promote Karate as the second sport for the Olympics 2004. Many WUKO officials believed him and others did not pay attention, with the result Mr. Yerolimpos to take the position of the WUKO General Secretary.

Dear Sirs, This letter has the only purpose to protect the international karate movement from a very dangerous person. This dangerous for karate person is Mr. George Yerolimpos, the President of the Hellenic Amateur Karate Federation: "the straightly up arising star in international karate command channel". I, Thimios Persidis, as General Secretary, and Mr. Takis Makris as president, made Hellenic Amateur Karate Federation (HAKF) from 1986. For five years my office was the official office for the HAKF. In June 1991 I took president's place and in 1992 the HAKF gave me the title of Honorable President. Parallel, I was the publisher of the Greek magazine of Martial Arts DYNAMIKO from 1977, with which I tried to hold HAKF in a good way technically and managerially with the appropriate critical publicity of its actions.

I have briefly read the message enclosed and cannot see why you should include people that were actually present in Rio de Janeiro if you wish to introduce an alternative reality than what was experienced by those present at the congress. You have managed to convey that you do not approve of your distinguished countryman, Mr. Yerolimpos, but if you wish to represent an alternative reality than that perceived by those present at the congress it would probably serve your case better to in the future to omit those whom actually were present.
