12/10/00 --About USAKF Team. From: Victoria Williams Book, United States Karate Fed., ToriBook13@aol.com
I haven't been competed for about 5 years now. What has changed over the years I have been gone? Would like to know what has been going on. address: P.O. Box 364 Portsmouth, Ohio 45662 sensei: Sensei: Donald Madden
--- Good to hear from you and how are you doing? The USAKF is not the Olympic member any more because of a pretty hard fight from the Thiry group and the lack of money to continue on the part of the USAKF. As you know, we completed the job of getting karate into the Pan Am Games and then ran out of resources and were vulnerable to a takeover. All that being said, we are still doing very well and are really making headway in being the keeper of the traditional karate and a strong voice in the USA. We have established a strong Hall of Fame, are still holding the Nationals, and have sponsored the new US Ju-Jitsu Federation which is involved in the World Games and on its way to Olympic recognition. By the way, Abigail Williams from Morgantown/New Castle was my Grandmother. Her father was Thomas Williams.

11/19/00 - International trips - From: Vivian Nelson, Robert D. Nelson, San Antonio, Texas, Origtectone@aol.com
I would like to keep informed about national and international goodwill trips for young Karate-ka and families. As I am a custodial grandmother, I would also like to know if there are funding assists available. My medical pension doesn't stretch far. My grandson is only six but is already a Tiger Brown Belt and has decorated our home with his many trophies and plaques. I am looking for this information now so that I can help him in his activities. I know that many sports events require advance planning to participate and that qualification for some competition means attending the right competitions sometimes in the right order. I have no desire to push him further than he wishes to go, but I don't want him unable to qualify for desired events because I was uniformed. Thank you. Vivian Nelson
---The main thing with kids is that they need a lot of reinforcement from their peer and family. You are apparently giving him the family support but the peer support must come from group activities, friends made from those activities, and role models in those activities. Keep him doing things with the karate group such as seminars, celebrations, grading meetings, camps, and last but not least, competition activities
11/1/00 - Belt colors From: Chris Rose , Lakeside City , American Karate, chris878720002000@yahoomail.com, Address: Santee< CA USA, Lakeside Community
I don't No Why Are Belt System Is different Then Most Of The Other Places Is It Because It Is different It goes White Yellow Orange Purple Green Blue Red Brown Black Send Me Some Info Thanks
---At the beginning there was only the brown belt and the black belt. As the gyms grew it was necessary to distinguish between the different groups of students. That set in place the 10 grade steps to the first black belt. The colors are unimportant, it is the grade level that counts.

10/27/00 -- Subject: Ilyse sternberg's lawsuit The facts were all wrong.From: SKUSAJKA@aol.com--Dr 1.Alex Sternberg
Hi there--I recently read the comments regarding my wife's lawsuit on your website. As the facts were all wrong. I wondered why didn't any of you check with me. Perhaps the glee in writing some dirt on USANKF clouded your judgement. Btw, lets see if you print my comments. I hope you will. In 1996 my wife Ilyse earned the right to represent the USA in the WKF world championships held in S. Africa. She fought in the kilo division and Coach Tokey Hill wrote that she fought better than any of the women on the team. She won a few matches before losing to a the bronze medal winner. But the womens team was not entered because Thiry thought that "the women may get hurt" although disappointed she didn't say anything. In 1998 she once again earned the right to be a member of the womens team(this time only qualifying in the team category) travelling to Brazil, naturally at her own expense. The NIGHT BEFORE the women's team event was scheduled, coach Tokey Hill pulled the team out from the competition (the reasons are murky and under dispute) noe Ilyse was really disappointed. A day or two later when she had a chance to speak to Thiry, she voiced her disappointment to him he told her that if she didn't like the decision, "well you can all ways file a grievance" this was perhaps not the best thing to advise Ilyse as she is a litigation attorney. Well she filed her motion which is at this time marked for trial. As a result of my wife's action I was suspended from the chairmanship of the referee council and even as a referee in the USANKF. But the USAKF never had a better record at protecting the athletes rights or the officials rights, which is why YOU LOST THE NGB STATUS. The sad truth is that almost every leader of the traditional karate movement upon gaining power forgets the athletes and concentrates only on maintaining power
THIS IS WHY THE USA DOES NOT DOMINATE THE INTERNATIONAL KARATE SCENE!!!!!!! Its so self serving for any one to gloat at troubles within the NKF or the USAKF or the a au but we all do the same karate and i believe we STILL HAVE MORE THAT UNITES US THAN WHAT DIVIDES US! TO BE HONEST THE USAKF NEVER ONCE FIELDED A TEAM THAT WAS SPONSORED FINANCIALLY. Neither did the USANKF. Both groups conveniently forget the MOST IMPORTANT THING
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>THE ATHLETES<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< THE AAU TO THEIR CREDIT HAS SPONSORED SEVERAL TEAMS As to my problems with Tokey Hill in the New York area its not nasty and after 20 years of friendship i am sure our friendship will endure even if we have some differences in politics. Because WE in the USANKF have the NGB status at this time why dont all of you join, participate in USANKF activities and help to guarantee that the organization stands for "ATHLETES RIGHTS" and a great USA effort. Don't kid yourself Julius Thiry has done many great things for the growth of USA karate as has George Anderson. My disagreements are not personal!
--Dear Alex, As you can see, we are printing your letter untouched except for a few changes in capitalization because you wrote mainly in lowercase.
As usual, you present thing in a very interesting manner, to say the least. You should be aware that we print nearly all material that is sent to us for distribution if it is suitable for a site read by young people and if it is a point of view, and not a viscous personal attack. You should also note that our many differences with you are not personal. We received the notes published and thought them newsworthy. We do note gloat at problems within the USANKF and in fact, I have many members of my personal organization structure competing in the USANKF as well as in the USAKF. However, it is true that for personal reasons, the USANKF does not fit into my group of favorite sports federations. However, I am not bent out of shape about it and appreciate that many fine people are involved. And I am not at all happy to see that the karate group representing the USA in the Olympic of the USA has troubles of any kind. I would like to see it move forward for the good of all.
Now, if you want a more complete story about your troubles/tribulations/victories/plaudits/accomplishments, please do not hesitate to send them here and we promise not to gloat, giggle or sneer. You deserve a lot of credit for what you have done and in the future we are sure you will receive it. Regards as usual, George Anderson
10/25/00 Subj: Party Ilyse Sternberg wins Federal motion From: A broadcast letter to USAKF and others. Some material has been edited out and the brackets inclose USAKF comments.
Hi there, As you know the NKF answer to Ilyse's lawsuit was a motion to dismiss her lawsuit based on the grounds that because the NKF does not receive money from the federal government or the USOC it is not bound by the same anti-discrimination laws and therefore no one can sue it in a court of law.(in other words it can discriminate and your only remedy is to file a grievance in the usankf?) Well, a judge in Federal Court in N.Y. disagreed and issued an order allowing Ilyse to go ahead and proceed to trial. this is a big setback for ....[The NKF leadership}....and a major victory for ATHLETES RIGHTS and all the members of the USANKF. I recall back in 94' when we were trying to convince the USOC that we (usankf) should be trusted with the NGB our motto was DONT FORGET ITS ATHLETES RIGHTS STUPID!!!
In a curious development, ....[The NKF argued].... that the NKF does not receive any federal or USOC monies, [and said] that the USANKF received (get this) $100,000 from BUDWEISER AND TEXACO and not the USOC.(Remember the Budweiser and Texaco logos on the brochures for the nationals). I am sure you share my curiosity and join me in asking ....>>>>>>WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT MONEY???????? <<<<<<< Did the athletes receive funding to the world championships??? ......Did the referees have their way paid ?? ....Did the members of the USANKF benefit? ........DID [they].... AT LEAST GIVE THE USA NATIONAL ......TEAM MEMBERS A FREE PATCH ....????
10/27/00 - How do I qualify to get on the team From: Dan Allen, bigd_karateman@hotmail.com
Hello U.S.A Karate Team, I'm a martial artist who studies Butokukan karate and I currently hold the rank of Shichikyu Purple belt with two stripes. .Anyways I was wondering just what does it takes to get on the team? I'm sure you have to be a black belt, and I would like to know if you could give me some information on USA Karate and what I need to know. I really want to be a champion in karate and I'm successful at karate tournaments, but I want more than karate tournaments. With your help I hop e I can reach my upmost highest goals in karate! Dan Allen
--- You have to attend, and do well, at the National Championships of any organization to be on the team and in some groups they will announce team trials which you also have to attend and do well. In the meantime, you should attend all the seminars and camps that you can
10/26/00 Subject: Please post letter in reply to above Sternberg note. From: Yungborn Naturopathic Institute, yungborn@netscape.net
I have been saying all along that the USAKF should be the NGB for the USA and this news only convinces the Global Martial Arts Federation membership this judgment is appropriate. The major problem we seem to have in the martial arts community is the appointed leadership at times forgets; without the athletes and schools supporting the efforts of unifying the sport under the Olympic flag there is no Olympic movement. Taekwondo ( WTF) and Judo ( Olympic) are perfect examples of what happens when the schools and athletes are forgotten or taken advantage of by those that wish to discriminate or impose a monopolistic business practice that limits the growth of the arts we so dearly adore and devote our lives to. I always believe that the senior black belts should be managing the martial arts sports and the junior black belts should follow the dictates of the seniors. Moreover, lets not forget that the student learns from the seniors physically demonstrating, just as they learn honesty, integrity and loyalty from the same demonstration. Dr. James Dussault, President Global Martial Arts Federation
10/26/00 -- Subject: Byung in Yoon From: Michael Black, aikidocenter@dialaccess.com
I have a question for you. It shows on your webpage that Byung in Yoon resurfaced in 1995 in North Korea. May I ask where he is today? Is he still in North Korea? Is he okay? I know that I have asked several questions but you see my former teacher Pyung Soo Kim of Houston Texas has been searching for his whereabouts since the Korean War. His teachers were Grandmasters; Park Chull Hee and Nam Suk Lee. As you know they were students of Grandmaster Byung in Yoon. Any help as to his current condition would be greatly appreciated.
--- I don't know where exactly but I will ask Grandmaster Park the next time that he contacts me, which will be soon, I hope.

10/26/00 Recovered from 6/12/00 Subject: National Championship Registration From: Michael E. Jehle, mejehle@hotmail.com
I am interested in registering for the National Championships to be held July 14 - 16, 2000 in Canton, OH. I have read the registration information on your web site and still have a few specific questions as to my personal situation. 1. I believe that the only forms that are necessary are (a) the registration form (from the PDF format), (b) a copy of my birth certificate, (c) the Amateur Athletic Waiver and Release of Liability (which is not in the documents in PDF format but which I copied from the text version on your web site), and (d) the Participation Sports Exam (in PDF format). Is this correct? 2. I am 46 years old and have been training for less than 1 year. I know to check 45 & over, Beginner and General Kata, but what kumite division do I select, since there is no indication of a senior kumite division? 3. Even though I am 46 and a beginner, I have competed in several tournaments in the general 35+ age bracket and with the beginner/novice division. I have no desire to be in a division that only has two or three competitors in it. Should I select age 45 & over - beginner (which is exactly what I am), or is it more likely that there will be more competitors in some other senior category (such as Senior 35 & over - Novice)? I don't want to get in too far over my head (such as in the Adult 18 & over divisions), but I truly want to know how I am doing so some meaningful number of competitors would be desirable. Your input on this issue would be greatly appreciated. 4. If I get to the competition and discover that there only one or two competitors in my division, is it possible to switch into a different division at the tournament itself? Thank you for your kind input on these issues

Dear Grand Master Anderson, I was directed to your site by Master Dussault. I do not mind that the private conversation between Master Dussault and myself is posted on your site, however Sir, the statement below found on your website (in <<) is an incorrect quote of me, this is something I did not state and I request that you please remove it from your site. To clarify, I what I stated: I, as USA group leader, was the first of a group of 18 non Korean born American graduates of the 1st Foreign Instructors Qualification Training Course held at Kukkiwon in July of 1998, to earn a master-instructors license (certificate) issued by Kukkiwon, World Taekwondo Academy. There were approximately 90 attendees from 38 nations at this course. The graduation photograph, as well as the USA group photograph is available at www.deestkd.com under Korea Pictures. There are thousands of Korea born Persons with instructors license from Kukkiwon and at least over a 100 non Korean born instructors by now, since the 2nd Foreign Course took place this past July (1999). I would never make such a foolish statement as the one below. Dussault --- Letter to WTF/ Kukkiwon International leadership

One of the better websites I have visited concerning the martial arts. My instructor is Shihan LaBrecque from Biddeford, Maine. I am currently stationed in Texas and by the end of October I will be assigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky. Around this post almost every available instructor is Korean orientated. I am hoping this will not be the case in Kentucky. Thank you for taking time to read my comments and please keep me informed of upcoming events!!! I am a martial arts researcher, and I made my doctorate thesis based on a new conception of the sport preparation process, defending the idea that the traditional and martial training is not opposite, but complementary, to the modern competitive training. As a result of the introduction of my program in the junior karate teal (my job before)I was selected as the best trainer in the country for several years, because my athletes not only won all the national and international tournaments, but also implanted many marks of competitive results never reached, consider itseleves as a record still unbroken. My program is being introduced in the training of more than 20 sport specialities, and in aesthetical, educational, fitness, psycologycal and physioterapic treatments. In karate, it is being used in the junior karate team, the PanAmerican karatedo Gojuryu Federation, the Dominican Wadoryu Federation, and the Dominican Universitary karate Leage. All that I want is to comunicate about it with all the colleages in the world. Thankyou.
--- It is very interesting and we are glad to hear from you. We have many technical persons on staff and are very much involved with colleges. You surely know that I was the president of the Pan American Union of Karatedo Organizations for many years. The Cuban Karate Fecundation was a member and I am certain that your leaders know me or of me. (George Anderson). I was also the president of the World Referee Council and the first-vice-president of the WKF.

8/1/01 -- Regarding the NKF From: Terry L Bryan, kyoshibryan@juno.com
Dear Mr. Anderson, Good to hear from you, hope all is going well. I did not attend the NKF nationals but had several black belts that went and they reported to me that there were maybe 1000 competitors. You know how they can inflate numbers by adding all the people that did kumite and then add all those that did kata and then kobudo to get there total competitors and all. :) I haven't done much with the NKF since I resigned as General Secretary. Sport karate only made up about 10% of the interests of my students and I haven't missed the expense of traveling to support the cause. When the USA Karate Federation was running the show, I felt that the American teachers had a fair shake. Once Thiry took over, a definite Japanese flavor took over. Having a background in Taekwondo under Pat Burleson and later a Chinese Kempo and Okinawan Shorin Ryu lineage, I knew I was always a second class citizen with the NKF. Unless your Japanese or at least have a Japanese Sensei you will always be treated differently under the current administration. I know that American Karate has great roots, great teachers and excellent potential in is athletes. To limit the participation to only one select group is a pity, and truly hurts us internationally I think. In the late 60's and early 70's Texas (blood and guts) karate was a power house, and to see these individuals discriminated against is a travesty and that is why I refuse to support an organization that is filled with prejudices and biases. I am sorry to hear that there was problems in the referee core, because that is where our students can get hurt. I remember when Igaki got drunk, tore up his referee license in front of everyone and threatened to beat up Sensei Tanaka of Alaska. I voted to kick him out of the federation for his actions, but Thiry ended up promoting him to head coach due to his connections. What a web we weave in the political arena, huh? As far as the problems with New York, I am sure that everyone knows that he did something against Thiry. Thiry has retaliated in the typical method and is trying to destroy him. Out of the 4 original vice presidents of the NKF, Alex Sternberg, Carl Hultin, Dan Kennedy and Gary Tsutsui , only Gary remains active today. The rest have been forced out because they were not enough of a yes man to fit in with the Hayashi-Ha methodology.--Should the current administration change, or should the USA Karate decide to take back the NGB position so that a grassroots effort to take care of its members, then I might reconsider my evolvement at the national level. Currently I am enjoying teaching here in Colorado Springs. Respectfully, Terry Bryan --Former RSO Chairman, USA Karate --Former General Secretary, USANKF

George, I just had your response forwarded to me that was directed to the fellow (from Minnesota) in wrestling regarding USJJF. I met you in Reno last year at Bruces Gathering. I was impressed by you then and am now even more so by the diplomacy and tact with which you responded to a rather hostile inquiry. We certainly need more of that in all the arts. I was taken by surprise by all the things that happened in the USMA and had some conflicts over loyalties last year. I have known Phil Porter for more than 20 years. It saddens me to see one who has achieved much in some aspects of his life and who has reached the age where recognition usually comes, to come to such a pass. We need more wise counsel from people like you as the new generation takes the helm.

7/31/01 Subject: USANKF 2001 Nationals Subject: USANKF 2001 Nationals Joseph Lease USA-NKF National
I am writing in response to some very erroneous information that you have allowed to be posted on your web site concerning the 2001 USA-NKF Nationals. First of all the OFFICIAL competitor count was just at 4,500. That is competitors only and does not include spectators and support staff. As for the bit about the USA-NKF of New York, it is clear that you do not have all of your facts straight on that issue, so there is no reason to fill in the gaps of your knowledge with falsehoods. It is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful as a martial artist to post information like that which clearly only has a defamatory intent. As far as athlete interest and selection go, be assured that the best interest of the athletes and the selection of the best team to represent the United States is the top priority of the USA-NKF. For anyone who doesn't believe the best team was selected, I would like to see the fighter who could beat George Kotaka, Jim Buchen, or any of the current US Team members. Ask yourself if you think these aren't the best people because they really aren't, or if your person was beaten, and you are upset by that.As for the added comment about the refereeing, I don't know what tournament that whoever posted this attended. This was by far one of the best tournaments in history for referees with no major injuries, and a very low number of minor ones. A view from a tape can be quite different that the one in the ring, and I challenge anyone who thinks they can do better to join me in the Referee Course next year, and help us all to see better as referees. Finally, I would like to clarify the Doug Pelinkovic issue. Mr. Palenkovic was did receive shikaku for the period of five years. The allegation that he assaulted members of the Referee Council are very incorrect, and whoever posted these obviously is misinformed. Anyone interested in the full details of Mr. Pelinkovic's shikaku, can and should contact the USA-NKF National Office for the public report of the occurrence.I would like to sum up in saying that I feel it is extremely unporfessional for an organization to post negative comments about another organization in a monitored public forum, such as this one. It does damage to both groups, and to karate-do as an art. Please eliminate future incidents like this one, so we may see karate-do grow and achieve the place it truly deserves in the greater community of sport.
Reply ---Thank you for your notes and we hope that you can make some further commentaries to enlighten us. We really have no experience in the business of national federation (Ha!) and it is refreshing for you to lecture us on intent and content. We are sure you are indeed an expert on such matters. We have no interest in defaming the National Governing Body for karate at all and are sorry if you do not agree with what we post. If you would be so kind as to set us straight, we will post your response.
We are sure that there are gaps in our knowledge. Why wouldn’t there be? Where do you post ALL the information that is of interest to the entire USA regarding OUR national governing body for Karate? If you have such a place, we will visit it, but until that time comes, we rely on what we consider RELIABLE sources. The NY fuss is of interest to everyone in Karate and we are sure that the major magazines will discover it in due course without our assistance.
For your comment that “As far as athlete interest and selection go, be assured that the best interest of the athletes and the selection of the best team to represent the United States is the top priority of the USA-NKF.” We hope that is indeed a fact that is supported by the consensus of your athletes. And we don’t have anyone in the team trials so the idea that we are sore losers in baseless.
For the post on the incident with the referees, we have received communication for and against. However, as we cannot ascertain the factuality of the material posted we have simple deled it and replaced it with information from the you fine people. The tape we are still waiting to see. Regarding the size of an event, the true size of all tournaments is a question and we have a perfect right to comment on it.
We are used to counting crowds and our estimates have absolutely nothing to do with who we send to compete. Would you rather we did not compete? Why would you think we are so interested?
We feel that we keep an even and fair hand on our organization and we post information that is of interest to our group and many others. Everything the NKF does is of interest, both good and bad. We like commentaries from people like you but we cannot let you dictate our standards and tell us what to do. That is just like the Democratic Party telling the Wall Street Journal what to publish.
For the general tone of your letter, we do not feel superior, inferior, hostile of friendly to you. We are not involved with your operations and seek no influence. For the most part, we feel that people like you represent and show the true interests of your organization. And, I might add, we know little about you, although you and you club are on our mailing list. If you see me at any future event, it would be nice if you would come up and say Hello.
I would like to sum up by saying we with the NKF good luck in representing the USA in the Olympic related events and we are sorry that you take our posting as negative in nature, when actually it is not so.

7/15/00 -- Subject: Rebuttel about the former Director of the National Judo Institute From: Fowler, Robert <rfowler@tarrantcounty.com
Comment--- I am responding to the letter in your Message area about PSP. This is my experience with the USMA and Phil Porter: I have been a member of the USMA since 1997. I joined at that time because I felt the President of another association had promoted me to Yondan too soon. I joined the USMA along with two other associations to feel them out. So far they all have there strengths and weaknesses. As for the USMA, I have found that in the years that I have been a member, Phil Porter is the only one in the Organization that is really doing anything. " That is the FACT". Allot of these other High Ranking Directors are, and were quick to use Phil Porter and the USMA's name, but do zilch for the Organization. The USMA had a seminar calendar where all USMA members could place their events, seminars, etc. I only observed a few entries, and they were not even USMA instructors. I have personally contacted several of the instructors in an attempt to further my training, but they would not even take the time to respond back to me? One other question I have? I do not see any of these Black Belts that Jumped ship, so to speak giving up the ranks they earned from Phil Porter? Matter of fact some of their ranks increased immediately after they left the USMA? It has always amazed me that everyone else's rank was sold or given to them.I, on the other hand, did resign my former ranks when I left my previous association. And yes, 5 years after my Sandan and 3 years after joining the USMA, I was promoted by Phil Porter ( recognized by my first Sensei ) to Yondan.
The only reason I have responded is that I am tired of associations breaking up and then trash talking each other. If it was not for this and egos, just maybe we would have one strong governing body for Karate in the USA. But, that would prevent all these Grandmasters from making money and controlling their own Organization? I never met Grandmaster Trias, but I have on a couple of occasions got to spend some time with Allen Steen. Two great men who had a vision for American Karate and Tae Kwon Do. I understand that the USAKF is a fine upstanding, well respected Organization, so I was a little surprised when I observed this letter authorized for publication. I feel that each Martial Artist should be judged on their own merits, and not the association that promoted them. Thank you for your valuable time, Oss! Yours in the spirit of Karate, R. Fowler, Arlington, Texas

USAKFAnswer --- Thanks for your letter and I will post it also. The posting to which you refer was not written by us and was a comment received and does not reflect editorial policy. Now that that is said, we do have some difficulty understanding the reasoning behind the following.
What is it that you do not understand about why many important leaders are doing nothing for the USMA. What is it that you think they should be doing, and why do you think they appear to be distancing themselves from the organization? Does the USMA has the proper credential to issue grade in styles in which they have no great knowledge and is it true that held grades, particularly the honorary kind, bestow no qualification for the authority to issue grade.
Is there a violation of standard protocol when trusted organizations directly contact students of major sensei for the purpose of awarding higher grade?
Should the USMA or any other organization award grade without the due process of examination and investigation of the candidate by someone highly respected in the particular discipline. Are people wrong when they state that in all non-profit organizations the funds must be accounted for publicly? Do you really think that the USJA has broken up and that organization split off from the USMA? These questions have been asked of us many many times and we have refrained from commentary. Why don't you illuminate us, and we will see the word gets out.
When you talk about Grandmaster Trias, you should be careful to to note a direct quote or whether it is your own opinion of how he thought. He consulted with me often and deeply and his opinions were the same as mine and are reflected for you in the above questions.
For there being only one organization, you got to be kidding. There are different faces to the arts and the grading is different for each one. Why don't you go to TKD or the USA-NKF and see how friendly they are about awarding grade? We are certain that you would be examined most carefully. As for making money, it is a sad fact that each grandmaster who devotes his complete time to his family must be able to live and pay bills and that the money must come from the family. If that is wrong, what do you suggest? That the teacher stop concentrating on the family and clean tables at the local restaurant? Best Regards, for Real, USAKF

Comment on Repy --- I think I need to make some clarifications. 1) I in no way intended to imply that I knew Grandmaster Trias!!!! From my reading and understanding of him, I feel he had a great vision for the future of Karate. If my statement was taken that way, I "apologize". 2) Nor did I mean to imply that a Grandmaster should not make money. That is why I do not feel it is wrong for Phil Porter to pay himself a large salary out of USMA funds. From "my" observations he is the one earning it. I merle meant to say, " I have noticed that as soon as these Grandmasters leave an association they begin to bad mouth it", possibly to get members to switch to their organization. This usually is accompanied with, " that guy is selling ranks ". He is running " a belt mill ". He as no " authority "to issue that rank.
I am not just defending Phil Porter or the USMA. Where does it stop? An association that I belonged to stated in a large group of Black Belts that Robert Trias had to buy his ranks in Japan? Can you believe this? (One of the many reasons I resigned from his group. That and I would be about a 7th Dan now.) The KTA and it instructors said it about Jhoon Rhee? I have been to AAU and USA-NKF tournaments where I over herd some of the Officials saying similar things about your Organization. I can go on and on. I usually just ignore these people, but they did not put it in writing.
Now my turn to ask a few questions???? Why is it that one of the Associations that broke from the USMA offered to Certify my rank, but it was only cost me a couple of hundred dollars? No retest???? Just "money"!!!!! How is it that this new association now has the authority to rank me? How can a 6th Dan Jujitsu (now 7th Dan) take a 10th Dan away from one Grandmaster and issue it to another? (Same association). If someone excepts a Directorship in an association, are they not lending their rank and authority to that association? Because of these questions and yours, who I am to believe? I am just a no body Black Belt from Texas who does not want politics, just fair and honest treatment. This in no way is meant to be disrespectful to your association and/or leaders. I have the highest respect for the USAKF and its leadership. Maybe that is why I was so taken back by the letter. Thank you, again, for your time.

USA Reply to Comment on Repy ---Dear Robert, Thanks for the reply and your careful explanation. They are well taken and your views parallel ours in most respects. I think that you have a good grasp of the situation, but nonetheless, I would like to add a few comments. By the way, I am especially fond of Texas, I went to grade school in Houston in 1937, my brother is buried in the US Air Force Cemetery in WACO and his family lives in Houston, my cousins are prominent figures in the Texas Lottery, and my general secretary of the USAKF is from West Texas.
I do agree that Phil Porter is entitled to proper compensation as declared by his organization but it should be open knowledge as is required for all non-profits.
Bob Trias never paid a nickel for certificates from Japan and Masafumi Suzuki issued USA certificates for no charge. There was a consideration, however, certificates were issued from USA to Japan such as making Suzuki a honorary Mayor of Miami, and the covering of their expenses to the USKA Grand Nationals. I know this to be true as I was in charge of the certifications.
For the USAKF, we never promote unless it is under a review by the entire technical sections pertinent to the style. For Shotokan, it was Takayuki Mikami and for the Goju, was Mario Higiaonna. The USAKF, like the Pan American Union and the WUKO did homologate grades, that is they would issue certification based on the same grade issued by legitimate organizations such as the ISKF, JKA, etc. The cost for a dan grade has always been $150 for any grade, which to any large organization is mere pocket change. The USAKF would not homologate all grades from many organizations such as the USKA because they were not up to accepted international standards. Robert Trias himself was refused over 8th Dan by the WUKO and he decided to forgo the pleasure of WUKO grade altogether. The idea of homologation is sound and followed world wide. It simply means that the grade is or is not accepted by the newly issuing organization. The USAKF has refused to homologate grades issued by some groups without really careful investigation. Students of Mikami, Ochiai, Okazaki, Chinen, Nakayama, Nishiyama, Thiry, Demura, Byrnes, Nanay, etc., need no further checking, but those of Joe Six-pack might. It depends entirely upon our technical committee to check the papers. As is often said, any applicant should have been often tried, never denied, and be willing to be tried again.
When one accepts a directorship from an organization, there is an obligation to keep it on a respectable course. Ranking and certification are, unfortunately, an important part of any martial arts organization and we all try to keep the quality up, to the best of our ability. This is hard when people fool around in and claim expertise in areas in which the are technically untrained and unknowledgeable. Honorary grade do not bestow any qualification. One problem with jujitsu is the figuring out of exactly what it is. Remember that the USJJ represents the International Union of the Olympic family (World Games) which is a huge international federation with millions of members and great standards.
Ranking in the JJ International Federation requires expertise in kicking and punching and other highly ballistic techniques. Judo people sometimes have a hard time with this and even if they claim high dan in their own world, that does not mean they are qualified according to international standards. 7th dan and over are too high grades to agree to and issue if the applicant is deficient in these standards, kicking and punching is required almost to karate standards. Get the technical charts and look for yourselves. Because of this, the USJJ does not accept the grade of many 10th degree grand masters, and the USAKF does not, at this time, issue any grade higher than 9th, and has no plans to do so.
Both organization are stand alone. The USAKF does not issue jujitsu grade and the USJJ does not issue karate grade. To me, it is ridiculous that a judoka thinks that they that the ability to determine if a karate grade advancement is due and if so upgrade student of a serious teacher, the ones that do deserve all the problems that the get. The same can be said for karate or kempo practitioners. Now, the USJJ has benn around for some time, the USJA, the USJF, the USKA, the USKK, the AAU all are old repected groups with really good overseers, and probably all of them think that the USMA is short on most accounts, except for the highly qualified judo teacher who is the leader. You ask Because of these questions and yours, who I am to believe?
There are no nobody black belts. All the seniors were, at one time, beginners. We are just older? Our advise is to keep practicing and stay respected and legitimate the best you can. Please understand that the national federations are peopled by good men and women who try to do their best, and is a fact that we all attempt to stay with what we know. I have given you a lengthy answer because your letter to us struck a good note and your ideas are to the point and need an straight answer. We hope that we have done just that.
7/10/99 -- Subject: Regarding the former Director of the National Judo Institute -- From the USJJ National Office with a request for publication.
Answering a letter: Dear Sir, Good to hear from you! Unfortunately, a lot of disappointment with this fellow has spread across the USA. Seems he has has been selling "any rank" to "anyone" for some time. (All you need is money or a credit card to get rank from porter.) This fact is well known across the USA.
The primary reason he was kicked out of the USJA (physically forced & carried out of the USJA Building) was his extensive misuse of funds.. Unfortunately, we found that the USMA is simply his personal "retirement account' with no Finance Committee nor Public Board Meeetings, nor Real Program. In other words, no accountablity...
He is a Great "Car Salesman" but... He (hear that he) is currently under investigation by a federaral agency. He recently fired the USMA Finance Director after the accountant informed several USMA Board Members of what is happening. I have been informed the Financial Books have been impounded.... In the opinion of many...it is just a matter of time, before they arrest him or at least shut his program off...This is all very disappointing to many.. He could have done many Good Things if his Greed & Ego had not got in the way.
He appears to be on a "mission of vengence" against the NGB for Judo and any other organization that represents Technical Excellence & established Standards...
The fact that he promotes with no standards (nor authority from the many system organizations) has been "no favor" to the martial arts community. In fact, it has hurt the martial arts community.. His promoting people "behind the back" of many Sensei has caused many "bridges to be burned" between porter and others. I know that the above situation has caused many bad feelings toward his program. The above are Facts, not gossip.. Best advice,,, stay clear of that guy. However, some USMA Black Belts are very credible Martial Artists. Unfortunately, they have dropped alot of funds down the "bottomless porter pit" that only helps him, but does nothing to futher the development of Martial Arts in America. My suggestion, fInd another organization that is "doing something" for its members and is "furthering the development" of the martial arts"!
Best of luck in your martial arts training., respectfully, A concerned martial arts citizen. This should be published.....

The Hall of Fame is a real one and it is not possible for anyone to buy their way in. The people are selected by a board for their distinguished performance in the martial arts. I enjoyed your web page with the history of Grandmaster Kanken, Toyama. I am a student of Grandmaster Kim Soo(Chayon-Ryu), who was a student of Nam Sok Lee(Chang Moo Kwan), Park, Chul Hee(Kang Duk Kwan), and Jong Pyo Hong(Hung Moo Kwan), all students of Yoon, Byung-In(Kwon Bap). I am interested in the information on Yoon, Byung-In. Where did you receive information about his re-appearance in 1995? We have been looking for him for some time as we are probably the last to carry on his Chuan-fa teachings(forms and techniques). I would be grateful for your help in locating further information on him.
---- 6/26/00 Grandmaster Anderson, I seem to have been a little "quick" and excited with the previous e-mail about Yoon, Byung-In. I continued to view your web site and found the exact same equerry about Yoon, Byung-In to you from Master Mitchell in North Carolina. Thank you for your patience.
6/18/00 -- Subject: USA - NKF News from our many friends
About the USA-NKF discussion e-group ---- We are hearing comments about karate's Olympic federation : Apparently the USA-NKF had an e-group where people spoke about any topic they wanted to. Well, a lot of people were putting down the USA-NKF and had complaints about the officials, medals etc.. Well, the Federation's communications manager was allegedly asked to turn off the e-groups. Apparently this was done, and now there is not electronic area in which to voice comments. Well, one federation leader had a argument with a higher-up and wanted to know why there was a shutdown order , This is America and we have the right to say what we want. Well, this fight got bigger, and the fuss moved up the ladder of command and finally reached the highest level. There was a big dispute, and the complainer resigned from the USA-NKF. He then is said to have started his own e-group using the USA-NKF logo and on the bottom stated that his site was done with the approval of the Technical Committee. (We haven't seen the site yet. Does anyone have an address for it?) He allegedly was then told to turn off his site and he did not. We hear legal action is a possibility. That certainly is interesting information about the Olympic Karate representative.
About the USA-NKF New York group --- We hear: That a potential 5 million dollar law suit against the USA-NKF is moving forward in New York. We hear that it arises from an unsatisfactory team placement for the wife of Alex Sternberg. Speaking of Alex, he and Tokey Hill apparently are having a real go-to. Tokey allegedly has started his own RSO in New York, and Alex is trying to convince everyone in New York to join his RSO. It is a nasty fuss going on.
About the USA-NKF Los Angeles group --- We hear:Also Yamazaki Sensei, Miyake Sensei and David Crockett have started their own RSO in southern California. This surely will create a huge problem for the USA-NKF. Several of the top Spanish Instructors in that area have sent out letters about these three Instructors which reportedly have gotten the Federation leadership upset.
About the circumstances --- We hear: So the Federation has fusses going on. So, what else is new. Is that why there is no more e-group!

6/12/00 --Subject: Re: Instructor in St. Louis -- From: James Caldwell, shinry19@idt.net --To: Bobby Washington, bwashing@eecs.uic.edu Hey! What ever happened to Sam Brock? ----I know of and have met Sam Brock. My meeting with him was brief at a tournament in Springfield, IL. He led me to believe that he had retired from the martial arts because there was no money in it. Interesting! Sam taught me when he first started a school. I was in junior high (14 years old [1965] with a couple of other students who were also from East St. Louis, Illinois; they were two years older;). One other high school student who started after us was David Brownridge. We were brown belts and helped David who moved up to brown belt really fast (maybe 4-6 months; I never went past brown). Last time I saw Dave was 25 years ago in Champaign where he had settled and was making quite a bit of money (with 4 schools around Illinois). David was planning on becoming a millionaire by 30 (he was about 26 at the time). So, it's rather ironic that Sam, who taught David would quit because he couldn't make any money.
---I believe he lives somewhere in the vicinity of St. Louis.
Thanks for telling me. I'm in Chicago in school and will have to look Sam up when I go home on the next break. He was a really good instructor and friend to us when we were teenagers (Sam was 24 when I started at 14 -kind of a kid himself in a way -sort of a big brother to us) I hope this helps you out. I have referred your question to my associate in Akron, OH, Hanshi George Anderson. Please keep in touch. By the way, what about Bob Yarnell? His club was about 10 blocks from Sam's. They were friends and we used to go down the street and spare from time to time. Where's Bob now? I saw his wife Joyce on a special that Wesley Snipes did on cable, honoring masters who have made contributions to American Martial arts (something like that).
---You asked about Bob Yarnell. I believe he has recently, as in the last two years, he retired and moved to Arizona. Prior to that he was managing an apartment in the St. Louis area. I see Bob once a year at Phil Koeppel's United States Karate-Do Kai annual event in Peoria, IL. This year it will it will be about the 21st of July. Curious you mentioned Brownridge. I had a run in with one his students a few years ago. You might contact another one Brownridge's former students concerning information about Sam Brock, Doug Dennis of Springfield, IL. Doug operates a dojo there. I understand that Doug broke away from Brownridge and aligned himself under Brock at some point in time. When Brock retired from teaching karate he turned over the reigns of his National Karate-Do Association to Doug.

5/27/00 Subject: Your Line (Teachers) From: Henry Hoff, hhoff@southeuclidfire.com To: George Anderson, Hanshi, usakf@raex.com
Hanshi Anderson, Hello, and thanks for another great testing session on Sunday. I am writing to you in the hopes of information. Last Sunday my performance was something less than "stellar" when you asked me about the lineage of your teachers. I was embarrassed that the only one I could place was your immediate teacher, Mr. Chull Hee Park. I confess confusion at trying to place the appropriate names in the proper order. I have attended seminars, read my manual, and looked over my notes, all to little avail. You also asked me what style our system was based on. My response to that was equally uninformed. I view the history of my style as important, and I take my study of the Kwanmukan seriously. Would it be possible for you to help me with the lineage of your teachers, as well as understanding the origins and development of our style.I would very much like to be able to answer you with something more respectful than "duh" the next time I am asked about important aspects of our system. Just when I feel like I am starting to get a grasp on Cognitive Restructuring, I realize how little I know about our system. I may not be the best practitioner of karate that the Kwanmukan has to offer, but it would certainly be irresponsible of me if I did not continue to improve. I thank you very much for your time, it truly is unique to be able to contact and interact with someone in your position. Respectfully, Henry Hoff (student of Sensei Snevel)
----You always do a good job and if not so, I would not have called on you. I have trapped many of the Shihan in the same way and I think it is good for you to know that you knowledge is not yet imbedded and requires further study. When you are promoted to 3rd dan you can be sure that I will call on you again. Rest assured that I am more than satisfied with your progress.

Sirs, There has been a con man in Colorado Springs Colorado who opened/closed a karate studio near my house. He used the From USA Karate. I noticed that USA Karate is your registered trade From. Is he affiliated with your organization? If not perhaps you could put the word out over your website. You may also want to press charges if he is caught. He uses the From Master Steve Gordon (3rd deg.) and the From Ed Arnold (3rd deg.) also appears on his flyer. He has tried to pass himself as a Vietnam POW and gone so far as to be interviewed on national radio to collect contributions to open another studio in the area. 5/8/00 -- Subject: USKA From: George M.
I am a former student of the late Sensei Robert A. Trias. I am almost 60 years old and studied with sensei during 1956, 57, 58, and 59 when I entered the Army. During those days in Phoenix, Arizona, we had to study Judo for at least a year before learning a block, chop, punch, kick, or thrust. I never rose about 3rd degree brown belt, but studied Judo and taught self-defense after 1959 in the Army. I was the 6th person to become a member of the United States Karate Association, and still have that certificate, from about 1958 or 1959. What became of the United States Karate Association originated by the late Sensei Trias?
----I really dont think that the men very close to GM Trias had a clue to what he was about. He talked to me a lot about the secession and wanted me to handle it, including setting up a USKA headquarters here in Ohio to stave off a run by Lentins and their group in Florida. I am in complete agreement with GM Trias about the links between judo and karate. The old timers are still in close touch, and I will soon meet again with Phil Koeppel. If you like, . I will put you on the USKA list and keep you informed of the scuttlebutt.
5/8/00 -- Subject:Seibukan, Japan -- From: Barry Southam, southamb@hotmail.com
I am contacting you in the hope that you would be able to share information with me concerning the Seibukan in Japan. I have been trying to find out if an organization called the Dai Nippon Seibukan Budo/Bugei Kai exists in Japan and if so its address, but have been unsuccessful. I think it is in either Kyoto or Osaka. Supposedly it is an organization that has various divisions for different Japanese martial arts. A man named Kitahara Tatsuo Suzuki had been an official of this org. If not the President in the past. I am not really sure if this man exists. Would you please share an address for the Nippon Seibukan Academy and a little history of it and what arts it includes and is it considered an organization or Dojo ?I would greatly appreciate your sharing info. About the Nippon Seibukan Academy and if you have an knowledge of the Dai Nippon Seibukan Budo/Bugei Kai and its address in Japan or someone in Japan that I could contact who might be able to verify its existence. Thank you for your help. Barry E. Southam Judo 5 th dan USJA Judo 6 th dan USMA ( Phil Porter)
----The Dai Nippon Seibukan was under Masafumi Suzuki, from whom I hold 9th dan and upon his death was to go to 10th, who died several years ago. I gave his main eulogy and met at that time with his son, Uyehara, and others of importance. Since then, there was a disagreement about the manner of continuance and I did not want to become involved. At the funeral, it was stated that everyone should follow Hanshi Anderson, which of course was not possible. The Seibukan is in Kyoto and is the largest dojo there. It is still in operation. If you like, you can call me. And by the way, how did you get tangled up with PSP? You would really like the USJJ. Colorado USJJ runs out of the old Judo Institute.

Want more information . The site was very informative BUT KARATE STYLES SHOULD BE GLOBALISED AND LESSONS ALSO SHOULD BE GIVEN THROUGH THE INTERNET
----Your comments are certainly correct and we are working for that goal. Styles are all related and should be unified in concept, just like mathematics. Until that time, internet lessons will not be feasible because most present styles do not like to be adulterated.
5/4/00 Subject: Question about the Hall of Fame- From: Guitarbart@aol.com (Recovered and redated)
I am in the process of researching material for a book about US halls of fame. Could you tell me the status of your facility? For example, is there a building and do you have a telephone number? If so, could you forward information to me at this address? If there is a brochure containing additional information I would appreciate a copy. Please send one to me at the following address: 25 Hillcrest Rd.Holyoke, MA 01040-2912. Thank you for your help. For your information, I plan to research as much as I can on-line. In 2000 I plan to visit each HOF I will profile in the book. Hopefully I'll publish it in 2001. Regards, Dave Bartley --
--Thanks for visiting our Web-site. Sorry to be so late getting back to you, but we had a massive crash and your letter was just recovered. The Hall of Fame is a real one and it is not possible for anyone to buy their way in. The people are selected by a board for their distinguished performance in the martial arts. We do have a building and are in the process of upgrading the facility, in other words, we are finally achieving some sponsorship. We have a great web site at http://www.usakarate.org/hall.of.fame.html Our hall of fame is for bona fide national federations and includes US Ju-Jitsu Federation, Central Taekwondo Association as will as the USA Karate Federation.

Could you send me the information on the participation of women in your association?
---- We do not keep statistics about the women is our organization. They are treated equally as athletes and officials. We were the first group in the world to insist on full participation for women of all ages and karate now endorses the concept in principle. That is the trouble "in principle." We like to think that we are enlightened and treat all are participants fair

5/1/00 Subject: USAKF Questions From: Cynthia McCaskey, cynthia.mccaskey@airlinehyd.com
My husband and I run a karate club & we have heard the name "USAKF" bandied about. One of our parents received a letter from the organization not too long ago about tournaments & upcoming events and I believe you had been the one to sign it, which is why I'm writing to you. Our club has been involved in local, regional & other national associations, but I'd like to explore your organization a bit. Everything I've heard about the organization has been positive, so far. Can you give some information about what the organization offers in the way of events (i.e. how frequently seminars & tournaments are held & if they're spread out around the country), costs of membership (club and individual), benefits of membership, annual requirements (testings, certifications). If you cannot answer these questions, would you please direct me to someone who can? In addition, I'd like to receive a copy of the USAKF rules & regulations. Is it possible to order a copy or have one sent to me? Thank you, Cindy McCaskey Falls Shotokan Karate Club
----Where are you located? If you send us your address we will send you our rules.

4/3/00 Subject: WKC vs WKF From: Fowler, Robert, rfowler@tarrantcounty.com
What is the difference between the World Karate Federation and the World Karate Confederation? Does the USAKF compete in WKF/USNKF events? Is the USAKF affiliated with the USOC or the IOC in any way? Do you have any affiliated schools in Texas. Robert Fowler Arlington, Texas
----The WKF is the old WUKO and represents the Olympic sports and the governing bodies for the Olympic structure for the sport of karate. The USAKF is not very happy with the USA-NKF and I have retired from the WKF as the 1st V.P. and head of the Pan-American Union. However, our athletes and members enjoy prominent positions in the USANKF and a lot of their team is from my personal dojo structures. The WKC is composed of former officers of the WUKO and is not political, just has competition, somewhat erratic but well founded. We compete there whenever we get the urge.

I know how great Karate is, but I am having trouble finding statistics to back up my claims. I was wondering if you might have this type of information or know where I may obtain it. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
----- There is no official statistical base for the martial arts in the USA nor for karate in particular. Millions of people are practicing and the International Olympic Committee member World Karate Federation has about 50 million members. Specifics are easy to approach by any general list in nearly impossible.

2/23/00 -- Hello from an old student -- Jim Carroll, jc@en.com
It was quite a joy to find your web page . Although it has been many years, almost 20, since I have had the honor of seeing you in person, you are in my thoughts quite frequently. I have many good memories of the training and the friendships I made through karate. As I have moved on professionally, I have called upon the self confidence and skills that your training has provided many times. When I am presented with a new challenge, I recall many of the challenges you put in front of me and how you gave me the confidence to accomplish my goals. Two years ago at the age of 46, I suffered a massive heart attack and required 5 bypasses. The day of the emergency surgery, the doctors told me I may not make it through the night. Following surgery, one of the first questions I asked was would I be able to get back to karate. One of the driving forces that kept me alive was the thought of getting back into the martial arts. I thank you for that! I am now ready to start back, and I plan on working out at first with Mr. Andrea at the Falls location. I look forward to seeing you again in the near future. With deepest respect, your student always.

2/19/00 -- Regarding Olympic funding -- Copy of USNFKF message recieved Re: REFEREE (Aki is correct) RMontgo907@aol.com to: usa-nkf@egroups.com
In a message dated 02/18/2000 6:39:07 PM Eastern Standard Time, Omikarate@aol.com writes: I had a chance to talk with PR Directors from other Olympic sportsfederations at the last year's USOC PR Summit in Colorado Springs. They were saying that the majority of the funding for their sports comes from theircorporate sponsors. Karate needs to get to that level somehow. Does anyone have any connections? Aki
This is correct. Currently more money is being poured into Jujitsu especially in Europe than into karate. More corporate giants are jumping on the jujitsu road to the Olympics. It is less complicated in itself and less ego's abound making it easier to get policy, positive changes, and marketing quickly to the top. Everyone in jujitsu also gladly shares knowledge to help all schools hold the knowledge needed to be a fair contender. Unlike traditional costly problems requiring sanction fee cost and red tape paper work just to learn the quality kata needed to contend fairly. etc.

2/10/00 -- Subject: What the Olympics will bring to karate --Forwarded to us on relay from the USA-NKF
I believe the entrance into the Olympics was the start of some wrong decisions on the part of the WTF.(In my humble opinion) .I see stirrings of change starting again now that Karate is almost there. Beware, some change is good, to much is not. Do not try to make Karate TOO much a spectator sport or you will lose the essence of its origin. Walt, I believe you are well aware of this.
----As both a Tae kwon do and Karate competitor over many years, I would respectfully ask that Karate does not go the way of Tae kwon do, now that it may be accepted into the Olympics. Tae kwon do of today in no way resembles what was taught in the 60s and early 70s. With Respect of all styles, Do you think the negative change occurred in TKD was due to the Olympics? Or, was it because the WTF made poor decisions? No one country has complete control over an Olympic sport. Japan will not own karate any more. The future directions of karate will be determined by the corrective will of all member nations. Poor choices made by the WKF can ruin karate. We can only hope that it will not be the case.

\What I don't like in the rules of karate and judo is "Waza-ari." There should be Ippon or nothing. Waza-ari encourages sloppier techniques and kihon. OMI san - I must disagree on your views about the waza-ari. There are three critical details many people are not considering when advocating purely ippon kumite. First, fighters DO NOT PLAN ON WAZA-ARI. Generally, waza-ari are awarded when an attack penetrates the opponent's guard before the opponent can successfully move away, block, parry . . . I will use two examples of a single attack to illustrate my point throughout this message. The attack I will discuss is employed by many champions today; it is often called a three step. The attacker throws a lead punch followed by a short shuffle and a reverse punch. An opponent may be entirely prepared for the attack, but when perfection of technique, speed, and sheer power become overwhelming, the attacker's reverse hand thumps into the opponent's stomach only a 1/100 of a second before the opponent blocks, moves away, or parries. This is attack would generally receive a waza-ari. The ippon scenario involves the same conditions, except that the opponent is less prepared and does not react at all before the attack is finished and retracted. Certainly, the attacker is hoping for an ippon when (s) he initiates this usually "waza-ari attack." The same is true for back fists, lead punches and other "waza-ari attacks." If all goes as it is practiced, then every attack would receive an ippon. Only sadly, a thing I have noticed is that most opponents will not stay still when I try to hit them. Second and third, we must entertain the outcome of moving the ippon bar to include or exclude the first scenario attack for the purpose of ippon exclusive kumite. If we were to include the first case as an ippon, we would degrade kumite in two ways. First and as expected, matches would become shorter and victories less decisive. Less apparent, but far more important, is that recognition of superior technique is lost. Imagine watching a match with fighters 1 and 2, the score is 1 to 1 (or 2 to 2 by regular standards). The match has been strategic and suddenly both fighters attack at the same time. Arguably, fighter 1's attack is stronger, although fighter 2 narrowly beats him to the punch. They return to the lines and fighter 2 is awarded his ippon. Next fighter 1 explodes off the line; beautifully hook kicking and flooring his opponent. The score now tied, again both fighters attack immediately. Again, fighter 1's attack is stronger, although fighter 2 narrowly connects a moment before. This may not be the most effective example, but I hope you can get the feeling that the better fighter has a greater chance of loosing by a fluke if we make waza-ari become ippon. Were the WKF to just accept the originally defined ippon technique four problems would arise: First, at the end of almost every match, loosing fighters would argue, if my light contact wasn't enough, what is? Second, more matches than ever before would still be scoreless at the end of overtime. Third, Karate ka are mostly well trained, and thus we cannot expect even the best champions to be able to completely fake-out an average fighter three times in one match. As a result, more "dangerous"(I don't want anyone to miss that word) techniques would be favored to gain the "ippon effect". For my last quarrel, consider opponents who only counter attack. Although they may not be as exciting to watch, what could have deeper Japanese roots (samurai)? Under the ippon only rules, these fighters would not stand a chance. Similar to baseball when batters try to beat the throw to first base, in karate the unwritten rule is that the tie (and the waza-ari) goes to the counter-attacker. Our question at hand is should the first type of attack be recognized for showing superior physical prowess and technique (but not timing), should only the rare true ippon be acknowledged, or should all contact be accepted at the same level. Thank you for reading this lengthy message, Richard Schwinn Oxford, Ohio

I seem to have ended up on some kind of mad list going around the Martial Arts world. I saw your email address and thought maybe you could shine some light on this. If not... thanks for your time.
---- It is a problem that some people just want to mess up the works. They probably have a thing against the arts and want to damage all that they can. I was just on the list myself and got that goofy mail and then responded to ask however I got there. Our mail lists are for a non-profit sports federation which was the Olympic representative for Karate and is still very strong and extremely ethical. We founded the US Jujitsu Federation also. We don't play game, spam, or whatever. Most of the names on our list come from registration and requests for information. The list is about 20000 the bulk of which are members or past members. We don't wish to intrude on anyone if they are not interested.
--------Thanks for letting me know what the list was about.

I also have been involved in the Arts for over 30 years, in both Karate and TKD. I see the same things beginning to happen to Karate, Yes I do feel that the Olympics are indeed part of the problem. I have been monitoring this group for about a year and I have learned much about the big 4 (shotokan, wado, goju and shito) from this and one disturbing trend continues: much talk of athletes, coaches, sport, competitions, medals etc. Little talk of artists, the arts, Sensei, or Martial anything. Remember Funakoshi warned us about competition. An Olympic gold medal is not the end goal of a true Martial Artist. Respectfuly, W. Harms

W. Harms writes: Remember Funakoshi warned us about competition. An Olympic gold medal is not the end goal of a true Martial Artist. It's not the end goal of an athlete, either. There should be two types of karate schools: one that teaches "martial art" karate and the other that teaches "sport (Olympic) karate." The sport karate schools will be standardized, much like golf, tennis, or swimming. It's the natural course of evolution. Kids take up golf because they want to play like Tiger Woods. Olympic karate stars will give similar dreams to millions of kids around the world. Karate instructors will have to keep up with the time. However, those who are not interested in "sport (Olympic) karate" can continue to teach whatever they want to teach, and can turn down applicants who are looking to learn "sport karate." I personally believe that "Olympic karate" is no more than just a gimmick that keeps kids interested in learning the art/sport. My approach is like Miyamoto Musashi who fought so many duals until in his 30s, and then realized that there was something deeper to the art than just fighting and winning. The philosophy behind karate-do is not something an instructor can teach. Each student must discover it on their own based on their own experience and training. It's much like enlightenment in Zen. No one can teach you or show you what it is. "Olympic karate" is no different from karate tournaments and kyu/dan exams. They are designed to motivate the students and to keep them coming back to the dojo for another day of training. I believe that a karate instructor's job is not to "teach" the art, but to give students the opportunity to "learn" it. All of these are a part of the program called karate-do. In my opinion, "sport karate" is an integral part of the karate-do program. Aki

1/30/00 - Subject Year 1999 ending for US Team Member Roberto Alvelais rob@jko.com. Frlm Rachael, his wife.
Amazingly enough, weve all made it through another year. Wow! Thanksgiving has just passed and Id like to let everyone how were doing and what weve done. Rob and I have discussed it frequently -- lots has happened in 1999: the birth of Gabriella and Teresa in February, Robs promotions in Kobudo and Karate, Robs 40th birthday, my departure from Morgan Kaufmann Publishing to become Biology and Earth Science Marketing Manager at Brooks/Cole Publishing, and more. Rob went to San Diego for his instructors annual clinic and tournament on Martin Luther King weekend. Yes, sparring was part of the test as well. It was not the brutal free-for-all you may imagine, but well-controlled action. I thought it most a test of endurance and character, because the participants had been going for several hours at that point and the day was very warm. It was clearly a struggle for some to muster the energy to move and think at the level they were called upon to meet. Rob of course did very well, bringing back memories of his days training for international competition. Not only did Rob test, but two of his students did as well. Doug is one of the founding students of our dojo, who began training in jr. high and who is now teaching for Rob at the Concord YMCA. Keith has been with us for 3 years, and is now preparing for competition himself. I was very pleased to watch them both, since I remember each of their first days at the dojo. It was logistically a trifle difficult for the rest of us to be there, but thanks to Shihan Mikis very supportive and helpful students I was able to watch the entire exam, plus hold both Gabby and Tea up to see it as well from the upstairs office in the dojo. Rachel also watched a good portion of it. Its unlikely theyll witness something so special for years to come. Our lives are wonderful, and we feel truly blessed to have such great children, a loving family, and wonderful friends. Thank you for including us in your lives and we look forward to sharing yours more actively in the future! Happy New Year! Rachel Alvelais rachel@jko.com

I myself, would like to apologize on behalf of my martial arts school, Sofranko's Karate Academy. Earlier today, a student from another school was visiting us. I allowed this student unsupervised use of my AOL account. He abused the priviledge by sending a SPAM e-mail to all of you of this group, giving the appearance that it was sent out by myself. It was not. I have no idea where the email he sent you all came from. It was something about making money or something. I apologize for what thi "black belt" did! He tried to disgrace my name and get SKA in trouble. I just checked my email and I have many complaints about this and I put it all together. I confronted our guest. He admitted his act and he will not be invited to our school again. Your list of names was compiled from martial arts sources that we were told that you were all martial artists and would like to receive MARTIAL ARTS related emails ONLY! If this is not, the case, let me know. I will take you off the list. Please accept my sincere apologies on this situation. I accept full responsibility and will ensure that it does not happen again. I am looking for an organization that would be in the best interest of my students and myself, in the United States and the Caribbean. Mr. George Anderson and Mr. La Puppet have always assisted me in the past in much needed situations. I remember when my own country if(so they claimed) at the time in 1991 in Curacao tried to prevent me from taking the PUKO referee course in Curacao, even though I had a letter of permission from The Ministry of Sport in Trinidad and Tobago to take the test. It was Mr. Anderson who at that time override the PUKO and I got my foot in the referee course. It was my first time and I received 93% on the written test. I did not received a grade, but I was happy just to be allowed to participate. After three attempts at the PUKO , now PKF referee course I received the rank of Regional Judge in 1998 in Santiago. I must point out that all the courses at PKF, 1991, 1994, 1998 I scored over 93% in the written test. I am wondering if regardless of the score I have to go through a process. Now my country new NF for karate is saying that because I do not live in the country, I cannot be member. Again, I am sending a lawyer letter to them. I am just fed up of red tape and politics. I will be happy to be member of the USAKF if I would be able to grow as an individual a and still embrace the policies of the USAKF

01/24/00 --Subject:C hanbara at Nationals --From: Jeffrey D. Ellis, ikc@raex.com
The following outlines some ideas regarding the addition of Sports Chanbara as an event at the 2000 USAKF National Championships. Purpose: To increase activity thereby creating more participation from existing Kata/Kumite competitors and possibly others that are not currently participating in these events. The result of increased participation will raise the fees generated from competitors and spectators. This effectively raises the total gross income. Proposed Individual Divisions: Boys ages 6-9, 10-13, 14-17, 18-34, 35& over Girls same , however I don't think we will see much participation Events: Kodachi ( short), Choken (long), Kodachi & Choken, Bo We could consider dividing divisions Novice/Advanced depending upon numbers of participants There also might be interest in team events. If that was the case either 3 or 5 member teams with no limit of teams from an RSO or club would be necessary to increase numbers We also should allow for same day registration -- Nosa, let me know your thoughts. I think this will be a good addition Jeff
1/27/00-- Subject:Greetings - About our site -- From: Yasuyuki, yasuyuki1@home.com To: usakf@raex.com
I just found your site recently and I have been reading it with great interest. Keep up the excellent work! I just wanted to write about one topic of interest. I have been training under the tutelage of 9th dan Takahashi Eishu, who teaches and trains in the small city of Oyama, Tochigi prefecture, Japan. He is a direct disciple of Toyama Kanken, who was of course one of the mentors of the late Grandmaster Walter Todd. Hanshi Takahashi has been quietly teaching Shudokan-style Karate-do in his dojo full time since 1974, and in the tradition of Toyama sensei, has not given his style a name. He refers to it simply as Okinawa Seido Karate-do, or just Karate-do. Hanshi Takahashi teaches in the traditional style, with emphasis on basic training and bunkai as a means of understanding combat principles. He is careful to distinguish his style of Budo from the sporting styles so prominent these days. There are no tournaments or competitions in this dojo, and the style of fighting is in close with emphasis on simultaneous block/strike defenses. There is also training in the weapon systems of bojutsu and saijutsu. As for myself, I`ve been training with Hanshi Takahashi since 1988, and am currently teaching Karate-do to a small group of students in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. It is my hope to carry on the tradition established by Toyama sensei and Hanshi Takahashi here in Canada, and with that in mind, I`m sending this message today to advise you of the presence of Hanshi Takahashi as another one of the disciples of the great Toyama sensei. I will be writing further messages to inform interested parties of the style and philosophy of Okinawa Seido Karate-do. In the meantime, if anyone has questions about Hanshi Takahashi or his Yoshinkan dojo, please forward your correspondence to Stephen Whiffen at Yasuyuki1@home.com. I would be pleased to hear from you. Thank you for your time.

1/27/00 -- Hello from friend and comment on Phil Porter --
George, I just had your response forwarded to me that was directed to the fellow (from Minnesota) in wrestling regarding USJJF.
01/27/00 ----Situation with the WKF and the IOC -- Adrian Ward-Rees, Middlewich, Cheshire, England -EKGB, EWSKA, TAGB, Wado Karate and Tae Kwon Do
I am currently preparing for the World Karate Championships in Italy in May. Will there be an american cintingent there, and what is the current situation with the WKF and the IOC
----There will be an American group at the World Karate Championships in Italy in May. For the IOC and other, that is a rough haul but the current WKF officers are very capable. However, even if karate does get in, I suspect it will be some years before it appears in the competition as a medal sport. Too bad, because it was a project of mine. What appears to be the drive now is to get Olympic financial support for the national federation. As you also must guess, the sport is not good on television, too many interruption. The next TV will go to jujitsu - not that is really interesting.
01/27/00 ----John Pachivas is hospital -- Gordon Garland
John was admited to the hospital on Dec.22, 1999 for congestive heart failure probably due to change of diet. While there his heart stopped, and could not be started in time to allow his brain to get enough oxygen, and consequently he fell into a come and went on life support. Subsequent tests show minimal brain wave activity, and at the present time the doctors are suggesting to his relatives that he be removed from the support system.......Sorry, I have no other information and dont expect that we will be informed as to when he dies or where he will have services......I think we have been through all this before in 89..............Gordon

01/27/00 ----Hanshi Takahashi -- Stephen Whiffen, yasuyuki1@home.com
1/6/00 -- About the USNKF competition - reprint from mail received from regarding the event
Comment: There is no need to qualify through any RSO. If you plunk down the cash they will let you compete at the nationals without ever performing a kata in your home state. As far as choosing the US National team it should be called the USANKF National team as you do not represent all of the Karate-ka in the USA. If we were truly interested in the KIDS we would ensure that all karate-ka had equal representation. This would then be in the true spirit of Budo! But as far as open minded how can a non-citizen of a country be on that countries National team? So come on Omi if your speaking for the NKF leave out your personal opinions, and back off the snied remarks about our country! To mirror your own thoughts I would expect the NGB of Karate to be more open minded, and truly represent all of karate equally! -----Original Message-----
----and
I am a foreign national currently studying in the US. I assume the US karate nationals are an open type competition and I can participate. Could anyone from thr USA-NKF confirm that? Do i need to be affiliated with a club? The current policy (which I disagree) is that you must have the U.S. Citizenship to be able to compete in any of the WKF Divisions. The WKF Divisions are ones from which the U.S. National Team members are selected. Examples of the WKF Divisions are: Mens and Womens Mandatory (WKF) Kata; Mens and Womens Advanced Kilo Division Kumite; Advanced Team Kata and Kumite. Foreign nationals (including Green Card holders) are allowed in all other divisions. You do not need to be affiliated with any particular club, but you need to be qualified by your local RSO (Regional Sport Organization) Qualifier Tournament. In my bitter disappointment, I was not allowed to compete in the WKF (back then it was WUKO) Divisions because I was not yet the U.S. Citizen (now I am). This, along with my ankle injury, ended my competition career prematurely in my mid-20s. I expected the United States (a country of immigrants) to be more open-minded. Aki
1/6/00 -- Cane manufacture and use -- Gordon Garland, supremeway@yahoo.com
George; I am glad that you like the cane. The manual will be in the mail shortly although I am sure you have no need for it. The only probable difference may be the use of the hook to the third vertibrae in the back, after hitting st.9 point on the neck, plus the use of the steel tip.
The cane is GREAT and I value it highly. If I want to order some, how much are they? You didnt give me a manual but I am thoroughly trained in the Korean use of a cane and have taught that for many years. ---They run about fifty dollars with that particular type of point.....Best wishes for a good new year. Best regards, Gordon
Just a note to let you know that your cane should be arriving Monday, or Tuesday. Also I have temporarily changed addresses, and location. I am currently in Atlanta Ga. I am starting a shop up here in Atlanta, and training someone to do some of the weapons to help reach the EAst Coast, and anyway I am getting tired of the same old thing all the time. I guess we all need some changes once in a while.... At the present time John Pachavias and I are staying at the MIND, BODY, SPIRIT dojo with Vicki Allan and Jim Knox...the address is 3344 Timber Ridge Trail. Duluth. Ga. 30096.... Are there any more of those dowels available like you sent to me before? If so, how much would they cost? Well, have fun with your cane. The tip is on a swivel and does not unscrew....That cane has lots of potential..and did I give you a manual when I was there last? If not I must send you one... Aas always, your friend Gordon Garland,
1/6/00 -- Pai's Taekwondo -- Anderson to Alex Damiani, adamian1@nycap.rr.com
Can you give me any background on Master Pai? The kwan, his teacher, his grade, etc.. My grandchildren are practicing there. Regards, George Anderson
---Hi, There are several Pais acadamies. The one I studied at is in Clifton Park, but their family owns 5 or six different locations with different Masters at each. Master Kwang Pai is a fifth degree Blackbelt. I believe he holds ITF and WTF (Kukkiwon) certificates. I imagine that he is relatively close to sixth degree, but at that level it becomes more political than technical. He was studying under a teacher in NJ, I believe the name is Bye (sp) I stopped taking lessons there last june after I graduated :-) but Ill probably continue with a different style in the near future. Last I knew they were doing the ITF forms (Chongi, Do San, Won Hyo etc). Anything else? Incidently how did you get my email? Alex Damiani

I would like to keep informed about national and international goodwill trips for young Karate-ka and families.

Hi I am new to the computer so forgive me. I trained for many years and was very very good. I hurt my self at work and had trouble training . It would love to get back to it but I feel like if I am not as good as I used to be then should even bother considering sparring was my strong point? yours with honor, Mitch.
--When we have people with a hurt back we start them swimming and then doing techniques in the water. That really helps them get back to training again.
5/12/00- USA Karate Name - From: COOPER, ROSS, COOPERA@d11.org
When his studio was near my house I dropped in and he told me that part of his testing fees would go to Chuck Norris Karate to benefit drug addicted teens. These were all lies. For more information you may want to contact Mary and Chuck Schantag who operate the phonies and wannabees website at pownet@asde.com <mailto:pownet@asde.com> and/or Mike Mcgrath who is president of NAM/POW's at mmcgrath@iex.net <mailto:mmcgrath@iex.net> .
