December 14, 2006 Subject: For Black Belt blog? From: Wendell Wilson <minrec@earthlink.net>

I'm not sure this is worth writing, inasmuch as the Black Belt Blog is over a year behind in its postings, but I'll give it a shot. What is the main problem with karate? Reconciling competitiveness with cooperation. Karate is by nature competitive, and so is everyone in it. That's good, but the downside is that everyone tends to think their own style or sub-style is best, and then looks down on all the other styles. This is natural because we all have a primitive tribal instinct which gives us group cohesiveness, and each person knows his own style and its strong points best -- in fact he may have chosen that style because it best suits his abilities or physique. But people in karate need to be more open-minded. Those in the very traditional styles need to understand that it is not always impossible to improve upon the old traditional techniques (after all, the early masters and founders of systems certainly improved upon what they learned from their teachers). And people in the more modern and eclectic systems need to realize that some of their departures from traditional techniques are simply foolish and would be disastrous in actual combat.

It takes a very advanced master, with broad-based knowledge of different styles, to come to the ecumenical conclusion that "it's all one martial art," and therefore all styles should be given respect. But even if universal mutual respect were to be achieved throughout the karate world, styles vary so much from each other that it would be extremely difficult to agree upon fair and even-handed standards of competition. Sparring is the great equalizer, of course, but even there it is difficult to get referees to be stylistically impartial. Universal pan-stylistic fundamentals of effective combat would have to be agreed upon by everyone. (I'd like to see that -- It would be very educational!)

Despite the extreme difficulty presented by the heterogeneity of the karate world, I do have faith that eventual unification is possible under enlightened leadership. Personally I hope that the departure of Julius Thiry from leadership of the USANKF will result in an outreach to more styles, and will provide an opportunity for the eventual merging of the USANKF and the USAKF -- like it used to be. (If anyone can achieve this, Roger Jarrett can!) Eventually even the USKA might be re-assimilated as well, and the Nationals will then be the only Nationals, like they used to be before the break-up. I'm sure that people who were around then remember that the National championships in those days were really great tournaments!

Anyway, I hope that reunification is on the minds of our karate leaders these days. With our greatly diminished ranks (compared to the old days) and shrinking tournaments, it is essential. And maybe, with a sound, overriding philosophy that is cooperative and mutually respectful instead of adversarial and mutually disdainful, karate will attract and keep more practitioners. And then (and perhaps only then) might acceptance into the Olympics be finally achieved. WENDELL E. WILSON

December 7, 2006 Subject: A Message from the USA-NKF President Roger Jarrett From: USANKF National Office <noreply@usankf.org> (Abridged) For full text --- http://www.usankf.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=58&Itemid=2

As the new President of the USA-NKF, I am very excited about the future of the Federation and some of the new directions we are taking. Although there have been some delays in getting things transferred from Seattle to West Virginia, we are beginning to get things rolling in the right direction. There are many new ideas and changes that we would like to implement, and I am always ready to hear ideas and comments from the entire membership. ---- In my short tenure as President, many people have shown tremendous support for what we are trying to achieve.  .... USANKF Executive Vice President Eugene Tibon has been working closely with me to keep the Federation moving forward .... He is also the new director for Traditional Karate for the Disney Martial Arts Festival held at both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida. He was instrumental in including the USA-NKF in this festival and having the Jr. Olympics sanctioned as a Disney qualifier. We are proud to have the support of the Disney Corporation for our competitions. ---- The USA-NKF, the Board of Directors held elections to fill vacant positions on the Board. Mr. John DiPasquale has been elected ... Secretary General.  Sensei Dipasquale is a very important American karate instructor and administrator .... is one of the strongest supporters of the Federation..... We are very excited to have him in this very important leadership role. ----The office of Treasurer, was filled by Sensei Gary Tsutsui .... [who] was Chairman of the Referee Council. He will be working closely with ....the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to make sure funds are properly handled and accounted. Mr. Cleveland Baxter has become the newly appointed Chairman of the USA-NKF Referee Council. He previously served as vice-chairman of the Referee Council. Also, Mr. Alex Miladi has been appointed to the USA-NKF Referee Council. Sensei Miladi achieved the level of WKF Karate Referee at the recent World Championships in Tampere,  Finland. This is an elite license that only two other US officials hold,  Sensei Cleve Baxter and Sensei Katsutaka Tanaka. ---- Dr. Alex Sternberg has been appointed as a member of the USA-NKF Technical Committee. .... Dr. Sternberg has many innovative ideas not only for the Technical Committee, but also for the Federation as a whole. He will also be working on Regional Sports Organization (RSO) development, particularly in the New York and New Jersey areas. ..... In addition,  Sensei Venero is the promoter of the Citrus Cup karate championships in Florida each year with athletes in attendance from around the world. Along with  Sensei Jason Sorgi, Mr. Venero has developed the Florida Karate League to promote the USANKF throughout the state of Florida ..... Mr. Bill Bly plans to use his magazine, American Samurai, and the accompanying website to deliver the message of the USA-NKF across the country and around the world. He has also developed a Champion League tournament rating system to help bring together tournaments across the East Coast and to promote USA-NKF competitions. .... In California, Mr. David Crockett and Ms. Jo Pledge have been working to strengthen and unify the Southern region. Sensei Kiyoshi Yamazaki, Mr. Jesse Canedo, and Mr. Morteza Alborzi, as well as many others have also pledged their support. In the northwest, Bob Nash, Doug Exum, Jim Doyle, Julius Parnizky, Chuck Sweigart, Jay Farrell, [will] keep the Washington RSO strong. Ramon Veras, Patrick Richoux, and Ricardo Johns have each been working in Texas .... ---- ....Coach Hideharu Igaki, Coach Dustin Baldis, Coach Tommy Hood, and Coach Jeff Kohn are to be commended for their work with both our Junior and Senior teams. The Junior team took the overall Pan American Championship in Curacao this summer, and the Senior team did and outstanding job at the World Championships. ..... I am sure that many of you are aware of the attempts to discredit and dismantle our Federation by those who claim to have the interest of the membership in mind. It is obvious however, that not only do they not have the memberships best interest in mind, but their true motivation is their own personal, political, and financial gain. Our legal team with General Counsel Randy Gordon and Associate Counsel Roger Moore, Randy Patterson, and James Kauffelt has devoted many hours to defend the Federation against these malicious attempts to affect a hostile takeover. They are working hard to put a stop to those who would try to destroy the Federation and forever damage the Olympic Karate movement within the United States.

I would also like to recognize Hanshi George Anderson, President of the USA Karate Federation (USAKF), and one of the most important founding members of the Olympic Karate movement in the United States. He was also very involved in the development of the WKF. He has pledged his full support of both the USA-NKF and my presidency. Hanshi Anderson would like to affiliate the USAKF with the USA-NKF, and he himself will be a special presidential advisor due to his vast experience and invaluable insight.

Since the beginning of my term in office, I have been working closely with the USOC and the WKF to ensure that the USA-NKF voice is heard in both of these groups.  I am pleased to say that they are both very happy with the focus and direction of the new administration. In addition, I have been in negotiations with Century Martial Arts, as well as Kwon, ASE, and SEKA Sports, for support and sponsorship of the USA-NKF and our US Team. Be on the lookout for new and exciting changes from as a result of these. ---- I have ordered the establishment a new US National Team Fund. This account will house funds that are specifically donated and raised to support the US Team, and will be completely separate from the general fund.  I encourage all members to make an additional donation to this fund when submitting your 2007 membership and support our US Team. ---- There are many people that have called to voice their encouragement and support of the Federation and our efforts. .... It is my plan to see that we are all more active in the running of the new administration. ---- Please monitor the USA-NKF website for updates and information.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the USA Open and Junior Olympics championships in Las Vegas, and of course the USA National Karate Championships and US Team Trials in Charleston, WV. Always remember, we are the National Governing Body for Olympic Karate in the United States. We represent the United States Olympic Committee and we are the premier Karate organization in this country. Sincerely, Roger A. Jarrett President

December 12, 2006 Sentencing of Glen Landolt  From: Venske, Jim - It concerns me that some of his students testified on his behalf as to his character.  He had many fooled.  I hope and pray he gets the help he needs. Best Regards, Jim Venske ---- Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Molesting Girl --This article was published on Monday, December 11, 2006 in News -- By Robin Mero The Morning News Email this story www.nwaonline.net/articles/2006/12/11/news/121206bzlandolt.eml>  BENTONVILLE -- A Siloam Springs man will serve a 12-year prison sentence for repeatedly molesting a young girl. -- William Glen Landolt, 37, was sentenced Monday by Benton County Senior Circuit Judge Tom Keith. -- Landolt, who operates a martial arts studio in Springdale, originally faced a charge of rape after his April 2005 arrest. The girl told police the abuse began in Rogers when she was in fifth grade. The charge was amended to second-degree sexual assault, and Landolt pleaded no contest in September. -- Defense counsel W. H. Taylor asked the judge for a sentence of probation, but Shane Wilkinson, senior trial attorney with the prosecutor's office, sought 15 years. -- The judge ordered a presentence investigation before announcing his decision. Some of Landolt's adult students testified Monday as to his good character. -- "I've taken into account all the circumstances," Keith said. "This type of crime is not only against an individual -- it undermines the character of our society." -- When Landolt was given an opportunity to speak, he said simply to the judge, "I sincerely apologize for putting yourself and the court through this today." -- Keith ordered Landolt to compete sex offender treatment in prison, serve an eight-year suspended sentence after release and register as a sex offender. Landolt will first be eligible for parole after two years. He has been free on a $25,000 bond since the day after his arrest.---- From: TR McClanahan From: Michelle Landolt -- Glen was sentenced yesterday to 12 years.  He is sitting in the county jail waiting on a spot to open up in his new home. -----From TR: Michelle was a student of TR McClanahan and a former USJA winner. It seems Glen plea was "No Contest." Then in open court they asked him if he believed they had enough to prove the case against him. He is reported to have said "yes!"    TR advised him when this first started that Glen MUST submit actual court records to him for review before he could support him in any way.   TR never received the trial record as promised. End of story.

November 30, 2006 Question About Robert Trias' history From: Tim Wend <twendkata71@yahoo.com>

My question is for Master Anderson. I recently was asked a question by a Shuri ryu practitioner from Texas that used to compete here in Ohio. Reading that Mr. Trias had visited Master Suzuki in Japan sometime in the 70's. Her question was did Mr. Trias actually train with Master Suzuki at the Seibukan during the visit? I knew that you were associated with Mr. Trias for sometime and knew him quite well. I thought that if anyone would know if would be you. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Tim Wend

GEA---No, GM Trias did not train with Master Suzuki at the Seibukan. In my experience, I never saw him training with any grandmaster — but he did pay attention as I noted during exhibition and classes such as the ones I taught. He had a remarkable sense about things.

November 10, 2006 Subject: I'm a student of Soke Marx....From: DodgerVangaurd@aol.com

My name is Roger Loveless, and it is an honor for me to be contacting you right now. Soke has told me that you are an extremely achieved Martial Artist in the field of Aikido and that you have one of the most authentic Japanese built Dojo in America. He gave me a link to you site, I read your bio and at the risk of sounding redundant, it is an honor and privilege for me to be contacting you! I hope that everything is going absolutely great for and with you! Please forgive me if this is double sent to you, I found the second address on your Bushido-Kai website. -- Over the past couple of months Keichu-Do and Soke Marx have become the target of an attempt to discredit both the system of Keichu and Soke himself. Recently a member of the web site, that is sponsoring this attempt, had brought to my attention that the Keichu article on Wikipedia had been deleted do to a lack of notability. I was able to restore the article and am currently working on reformatting it to meet the Wikipedia standards. The reason I am writing you is because Soke has told me what a great friend of his you are and that you are highly respectable Martial Artist. We would like to ask if you would please write up something on your web site or that you could email to me so that we can link it or post it up in the Wikipedia article, please let your voice be heard concerning Soke's and Keichu's standing in your opinion. -- So that you can go to the site and see where your statements will be seen, if you allow us to use them publicly, I will give you the link to the site. As well, whether your statement appears on your site or is something that you send personally to Soke Marx or myself a link to your web site will be placed in the article so that anyone wishing to find out about those who support Soke can. -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keichu_Do#Keichu_Do_.2F_Sok.C3.A9_Marx_History I Would like to thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide. Thank you and God Bless, Respectfully, Roger Loveless

November 7, 2006 Conversation: I need your help From: Jane <ladyjane2005@comcast.net>

To whom it may concern, I attended USA Karate a few years back and graduated to purple belt. I enjoyed it so much I signed up for the black belt club. Due to family issues, I was not able to make it past purple belt. I almost defaulted on the black belt contract, but have faithfully been paying every month to a trustee. I have tried on 5 occasions over the last 2 years to settle the debt through the trustee, but he keeps telling me you are declining my offers to settle. I have been paying for this club and never used it. My beginning balance was over $3,500. Currently I only owe a lot. I have paid for more than half of the black belt club and haven't used any of it. Please help me settle this account. I am willing to negotiate. …. Please, Help me settle this! Thank you, Jane E. Cole

June 27, 2006 Research Project - Improving USAKF National Championships Registration From: Bill Snyder <bsnyder2@neo.rr.com>

Dear Mr. Anderson, Last year we spoke regarding a research project on ways to improve competitor registration at the National Championships. By no means do I wish to imply that I am an authority on staging successful tournaments; however I have researched the issue and thought you may find some of the results useful. Following is the abstract:

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this project is to identify, through research, ways to increase competitor registrations at the USAKF National Championships. The objective is to find possible reasons competitor registration has declined between the years 2002 to 2004 and determine solutions to reverse this downward trend. For the purpose of this project, competitor registration implies both registration and participation in the Championships.

These Championships are among the premier martial arts tournaments in the United States, yet registration has steadily declined since 2002. A precursor to this problem was the electrical blackout of 2003. The sluggish economy contributed to the downward slide as dojo enrollment has declined and competition costs and travel expenses have increased. Other causes for the decline include competition from other martial arts or martial arts style tournaments and limited advertising.

The literature review suggests three possible solutions to the problem of declining competitor registrations. First, an active advertising campaign is necessary to effectively communicate information regarding the Championships to existing and potential competitors. Second, as competition for competitors’ registration fees is strong in a sluggish economy, an effective marketing strategy and execution plan should be defined. Finally, it is important to ask competitors for feedback to effectively gauge their satisfaction. As such, a thorough evaluation should be administered shortly after each tournament to determine what worked well and what could be improved upon for the following year.

The literature review suggests that four possible alternatives are viable for increasing competitor registration. They are build awareness and interest, marketing and execution, customer driven programming, and status quo.

Eight hypotheses are proposed to test these alternatives. They suggest that competitor registration will increase if the USAKF advertises with handbills, posters, newspapers, or martial arts magazines; establishes online registration, changes event timing, administers tournament evaluations, gives medals to all youth competitors, and awards trophies to those placing in their events. Status quo will not be accepted if at least one of the other hypotheses is proven statistically significant.

The data collection plan is a survey that will be e-mailed to ninety past competitors of the Championships. To determine the statistical significance of the hypotheses, the survey results are tested utilizing Chi-Square at the .05 probability level.

Fourteen of the ninety competitors surveyed responded to the questionnaire. While this response was too small to be representative of all tournament competitors; it is sufficient for the purpose of this project. Three hypotheses received a majority of agree responses (advertise with handbills and posters, establish online registration, administer tournament evaluation) and were tested for statistical significance. Of the three, only the hypothesis supporting online registration was accepted as statistically significant. Since one of the hypotheses tested is statistically significant, maintaining status quo is not acceptable.

The conclusions are that competitor registration at the USAKF National Championships will increase with the implementation of online registration. Registration probably will not increase through advertising by the distribution of handbills and posters or advertisements in periodicals. Registration probably will not increase by changing the time of year the tournament is held or through the distribution of competitor satisfaction evaluations. Registration probably will not increase by awarding medals to all youth competitors or changing the awards from medals to trophies for those placing in events. USAKF competitor registration probably will continue declining if changes are not implemented.

The recommendations are that the USAKF National Championships implement a portion of the building awareness and interest alternative and put into service an online competitor registration process. This procedure is accepted as a viable solution to the problem of declining competitor registration and should be established. The survey suggests its use will increase competitor registration. A follow-up study is recommended immediately after the 2006 Championships to gauge the effectiveness of this solution.

This has been an interesting and captivating project for me. Thank you for your assistance and suggestions. Respectfully, Bill Snyder

July 10, 2006 From: Jack S. Pyles na2510@sssnet.com Conversation: Non-affiliation Announcement From: Sam Justice. Justice

Instructors, Athletes, and Friends: This email is to make you aware of a difficulty decision I have made recently regarding my relationship with the non-profit organization USA-NKF of Va. As you are probably aware, approximately 2 years ago I associated myself and Justice Karate with supporting and promoting the USANKF of Va. During these two years I have served as the athlete’s representative as well as a coach. I did this as I believed the USANKF of Va and I shared the same values and goals. I personally wanted to support, promote, and volunteer my time to an organization that would put together and enable and promote a team of athletes to participate in traditional and Olympic style karate. I believe this would offer many athletes opportunities to which they otherwise would not be able to take advantage of. --- In some ways I believe the USANKF of Va has offered many athletes opportunities and I thank them for that. However my assessment of recent decisions, actions, and non-disclosures by the organization have left me with the perception that the USANKF of Va no longer shares the same values and goals that I have. This was evidenced most recently when the organization stated very clearly to me that there are NO TEAM Members of USANKF of Va. The organization stated that there are merely individuals who receive benefits. This declaration alone flies in contradiction to earlier documents sent to many of the athletes as well as my desire to help create and support athletes in a TEAM environment where the athletes and their skills and opportunities come first. ---- Because of this apparent and growing divergence between the values and goals of the USANKF of Va and my own values and goals, I have chosen to suspend my own personal and well as Justice Karate’s support and promotion of the organization known as the USANKF of Va. Individual’s who received benefits from the USANKF of Va are still welcome to participate and continue receiving benefits from that organization. Each recipient must determine for him or herself whether to carry the relationship forward. However, this also means that JKAS will no longer be hosting training in Richmond for USANKF of Va on a monthly basis. ---- JKAS will continue to hold monthly training sessions, in the same fashion as it had done for the USANKF of Va, and prior participants are welcome to attend the training. The only difference is that this will not be a USANKF of Va training event. Dates and times will be published at www.justicekarate.com <http://www.justicekarate.com/> . JKAS will continue to hold these sessions at no charge or commitment to the athlete while I and others pursue the potential establishment of a non-profit geared primarily and directly at creating and supporting a team of athletes to participate and grow skills in Olympic and Traditional Style Karate. Again, news of this organization will be updated on our web site as developments occur.

If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 539-6116, email me, or stop by the dojo and talk with me. In closing I wish the USANKF of Va and its recipients the best with achieving their goals and direction for the future. Your in Karate, Sam Justice

But what I came to finally realize is that you both were nothing but rip offs. Stealing membership money to use to pay for your salaries and expensive trips aroung the world. Giving yourself, LaPuppet and Anderson your little awards at the banquets. I remember you coming the NC for the Tar Heel Games and screwing up the tournament and then wanting us to pay for your trip! I see you are still trying to steal the dreams of children with your crap about the Olympics. WUKO could not and never will pull itself together enough to enter into the Olymipics. Please don't even try to say that the Pan-American Games compare in any way. No one even hears about these games!!!!!!!!!!! I went to your camps and games in OH, GA, WV and CA. What waste of time and my kids money. You people never taught anything of use. I remember standing for hours while some dumb ass looked at your stance while standing! You never wanted to teach anyone anything in fear they would beat your students in competition. Then when my students won at the nationals your sorry ass organization would not even give them their awards, because they couldn't attend the banquet! Do to the fact they bearly had enough money after dues, enter fees and travel expenses to stay another day for your sorry ass awards banquets. Which ended up being you, anderson, lapuppet and others giving each other a pat on the back and some big ass trophies. Telling each other what a great job you had done! YYour a joke of a karate organization. so you and Anderson shove up your ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xxxx

If you are discouraged, please forgive me as I will not make a habit of sending such news like this. As many of you know, I am approximately two months from receiving my MAT degree in teaching math. As part of the requirements for this degree, I entered into the profession of teaching high school math both excited and intimidated. Tonight's commencement ceremony brought my first year of teaching to an end. I was completely caught off guard when I was awarded as Teacher of the Year! I am really humbled to have received this on my first year! Thank you for hearing me out. It is nice to be able to share good news with everyone. George Aquila

May 20, 2006 Subject: Boggs' follow-up -- From: Kenukan@aol.com-- Mr. Anderson, Thanks for return call. Again, am sorry for my absence in the USAKF arena these past few years - miss everyone. Caldwell and I keep in touch and he has been great at keeping me abreast to operations and updated info. You haven't seen the last of me . . . like MacArthur, " I shall return!" Operating the dojo and the music company has been stressful but looking as if fruitation is coming. Like I said, I have a proposal before Gary Forsee (Sprint CEO), John Schnatter (Papa John's Founder), and David Stang of Brown-Foreman (David is Director of Marketing for Jack Daniel's). Also, a few weeks ago, Scott Simmons, President of Dualtone Records, called me to discuss possibility of co-opiing our song, NASCAR Weekend. Lucky for me I have a patient wife and a workaholic son, Travis. Bridgett and I are definitely pleased that Travis graduates this weekend. He has his degree in Business Management from the KU Business College - 3.75 GPA. Jim Harrison promoted Travis to Bushidokan Black Belt 3 years ago - only 25th Black Belt in 41 years. Travis is also certified from Harrison to instruct his Ronin Jutsu system - keep in mind if you need instructor for special seminar etc. Finally, Travis' test for Sandan is June 17th.  I would love to hand him his rank certificate with an additional certificate from USAKF. Travis had some momentous times with Tom LaPuppet - deepest respect - and if possible, the old certificate with your signature, LaPuppet's and Hickey's would be special. Besides his father, Travis would then have his rank certification from two of the greats from American history, Mr. Harrison and Mr. Anderson. Finally, don't know if you can arrange it, but possibly you can get Bruce B. to sign a certificate for Travis too.  I know he did one for Harrison's son Chris and maybe another son. If you have any old Jujitsu certificates with only your name on it - nothing against Bruce - Travis would be pleased. Keep the light on, dinner on me when you see me. Give my thanks to everyone and a special hello to Joan. Tell Carol HI too. Wishing you all the best in your move and let me know new address - will send home warming gift - surprise. Thanks again, Respectively, Bob Boggs
